64.1% of physicians are male and only 35.8% are female. African-Americans make up less than 5% of all physicians in the US. Black women make up only about 2.6% of all active physicians in the US I never had a doctor that looked like me growing up! The healthcare system was not and is still not built for people that look like me. However representation matters. We matter. Recognize that our presence alone changes the narrative and we can be the catalyst for more favorable health outcomes for our community. Only 5 percent of the American physician work force is African-American, and roughly 2 percent are Black women. This is why we matter: Black babies more likely to survive if they have Black doctors Black patients with Black doctors/HCPs got more invasive, preventative services, and care from their doctors/HCPs Black doctors/HCPs are more likely than white doctors/HCPs to provide healthcare in underserved areas and treat a higher proportion of Medicaid patients Black patients had improved outcomes when seen by Black doctors, and were more likely to agree to preventive care measures like diabetes screenings and cholesterol tests. Black people, especially black men, have higher rates of chronic disease. In 2011, Black men and women had a life expectancy that respectively was 4.4 and 2.8 years shorter than white men and women across the United States Black patients had improved outcomes when seen by Black doctors, and were more likely to provide preventive care measures like diabetes screenings and cholesterol tests.
