The shell spirals as it grows. A protein layer is secreated over the minerals for coloration and to protect the shell. Process begins with the shell gland a small invagination from which the ingredients to make the shell are secreated and structured. The gland is located in the mantle a hard region where all the organs are located .The shell will continue to grow along with the snail. They grow & differ by the water and food they consumpt. In this photo we are looking at the Lighting Whelks egg casing for their babies. This reminds me of a snake every time I see them but don't worry it's harmless. When you see them on the beach and they are wet just leave them alone.
