The Lettered olive is a species of large predatory sea snails, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Olividae, the olive shells, olive snails, or olives. The lettered olive typically lives in near-shore waters on shallow sand flats near inlets. The empty shell is occasionally, or sometimes commonly, washed up onto beaches. The shell can reach up to 2 1/2 inch long. The olive is a smooth shiny, cylindrical-shaped shell with a short spire .The aperture is narrow and extending almost the length of the shell, counting around the bottom and ending in a notch on the other side. The suture is V-cut and deep. The lower part of the whorl is just above where the suture extends outward and then at a sharp shoulder drops into the suture .The olives can vary in color from cream to greyish exterior with reddish ~ brown zigzag markings .The common name of this species is derived from darker surface markings that sometimes resemble letters. The olive is a carnivore .. it captures bivalves and small crustaceans with its foot and takes them below the sand surface to digest .Seeing them at a low tide you can sometimes see the trails they leave from crawling. Females lay floating, round egg maneulae that are often found in beach drift young and swimming free. We find the lettered olives daily but rarely alive and I’ve never seen so many together all at one time alive. I’m going to assume they are playing a mating game . Mother Nature never disappoints.🐚❤️ 🐚 Only Collect Empty Shells 🐚 Video Credit : Shell Guide Hannah 🐚 #olives #olivesoutfits #letteredolives #shellers #collectart #collect #sandybeaches #bestbeaches #ʙᴇᴀᴄʜᴅᴀʏs #bestdaysever #treasureseekersshelltours #treasures #shellmarcoisland #shellkiceisland #bestbeachesintheworld #bestbeachever #bestbeachesoftheworld #beachlife #beachlifeflorida#treasureseekers #collector #collectibles @GoodlandFLVacationRentals @Explorida @Shore Goods @10k_islands_shell_club @Ken @marco_shelling @Visit Florida Card @Gulf Coast Tours @Marco Island, FL

Educational Programs Available on Marco Island 🏝️ Making the Shell begins before the snail is fully grown while it's still developing in its tiny larval stage .Shell glands secrete proteins at the base of the shell then the calcium carbonate is secreated on this base. The shell spirals as it grows. A protein layer is secreated over the minerals for coloration and to protect the shell. Process begins with the shell gland a small invagination from which the ingredients to make the shell are secreated and structured. The gland is located in the mantle a hard region where all the organs are located .The shell will continue to grow along with the snail. They grow & differ by the water and food they consumpt. In this photo we are looking at the Lighting Whelks egg casing for their babies. This reminds me of a snake every time I see them but don't worry it's harmless. When you see them on the beach and they are wet just leave them alone. We would love to have you come join us on one of our tours …we can explore the beauty of nature and of course collect shells together .🐚❤️ 🐚 Join us : 239-571-2332 www.treasureseekersshelltours.com 🐚 Only Collect Empty Shells 🐚 #ridges #eggs #eggcase #eggcasing #besttour #ridges #ripples #iloveflorida #fl #shoregoodsmarcoisland #shellkiceisland #shellers #nature #naturelovers #naturephotography #whelks #whelkshells #treasureseeker #treasureseekersshelltours #babyshells #sunsettours #ecotours #shelltours #shellcollectors #conchshell #iloveflorida #treasureseeker #adventure #gulfcoasttoursllc #largeshells #shoregoodsmarcoisland @GoodlandFLVacationRentals @Explorida @10k_islands_shell_club @Shore Goods @Visit Florida Card @Ken @marco_shelling @MarcoIslandVibes@Marco Island, FL
