Should I do a fresh or frozen embryo transfer?? There are sooo many choices to make when doing IVF! One of the most common questions I get is-should I do a fresh or frozen embryo transfer (hint-itās usually frozen!)? Fresh transfers were waaaay more common when the āfreezing of embryosā process wasnāt as perfected. The survival rate of embryos for freeze and thaw was low-because of this, we tried to do fresh transfers more (and with more embryos) which didnāt end up in the best outcomes-high order multiples, severe OHSS (for those that were already hyper stimulated, etc.) Now, freezing and thawing of embryos has a survival rate of about 98-99%! The truth is, I usually only recommend fresh embryo transfers for a select group of people- -people who are young -people who donāt need genetic testing (see above) -people who have a known reason for infertility like tubal disorder, male factor, ovulation disorder, etc. -people who only want 1 child-Iād rather have patients bank embryos first (2-3 euploid embryos per child desired) before moving on to transfers. The uterus doesnāt age, but unfortunately we still have a biological clock that IVF canāt overcome. Itās easier to come back for an embryo transfer for a sibling in the future than to start the process over years later when it may be harder to get not only eggs, but chromosomally normal eggs! -someone who doesnāt have a lot of eggs-this is because when you produce many eggs, your estrogen levels can get really high! In a normal cycle, your estrogen only gets to about 200-300 picograms at its peak! When itās in the hundreds to thousands levels like in IVF stims, that can affect the way the uterine lining grows, which can affect the way the placenta implants. Because the pregnancy is implanting in such an abnormal hormonal environment-this can be associated with complications like small for gestational age, pre-eclampsia, pre-term birth, etc. It can also be life threatening if you develop worsening OHSS (HCG hormone is like throwing gasoline on a fire if estrogen levels are already too high). So this is what I chose. I canāt change your mind about family planning and donāt care to. God is in charge of that. Iām just lifting my hands up in surrender and sharing about it šš» I prayed and fasted about this because I hated the idea of not being able to control this myself. But on the other hand, if I did get what I wanted, I wouldnāt have my precious baby girl. So it lead me to question everything. I went to the Bible first to see what it said about children, family, womb, and parenting. I read it all and nothing there told me that I got to choose how many Gifts God is allowed to give me. All it said was, God open and closes the womb, children are a Gift from the Lord. God gives and takes away. He alone gives life. So I was angry. I was told by my church that we get to decided life. But the Bible never teaches that nor even alludes to it. Trust me I tried to find it! Look for yourself. So after fasting and praying about this I came to the conclusion that, we, as Christianās, are supposed to let God decide. After all, arenāt we supposed to āsurrender allā like the song, š¶ I surrender allā (but not my wombā¦) I surrender (almost) allā¦ it just doesnāt make sense anymore. Nothing was making sense to me and I was angry about it. The most important and greatest blessing God could ever give is LIFE and we think we should control that? What if He wants just one more soul here from you? Who are we to deny Gods will? So this is my thinking, I encourage you to explore this in the Bible yourself and pray/fast on it heavily.
