In my almost 30 year gardening life, I learned a lot through trial and error. Here are five things I learned from planting container gardens wrong.🌸
🌸 Choosing the Wrong Container Size - Initially, I used containers that were too small for the plants I wanted to grow. This restricted root growth and limited the plants’ ability to thrive. Particularly in the summer when they would dry out real quick! I learned that larger containers provide more room for roots to spread and access water and nutrients more effectively.
🌸 Inadequate Drainage - One of my early mistakes was not ensuring proper drainage. Without adequate drainage, water would accumulate, leading to root rot and unhealthy plants.
🌸 Poor Soil Choice - way back in the beginning, I didn’t realize there was a difference and used regular garden soil in my containers, thinking it would work just fine. However, garden soil tends to compact in containers, which hinders root growth and water penetration. Switching to a high-quality potting mix made specifically for containers improved plant health significantly.
🌸 Lack of Fertilization - I assumed that the nutrients in the potting mix would be sufficient for the entire growing season. However, container plants need regular feeding because nutrients in the soil get washed out every time you water. Then I started incorporating a balanced, slow-release fertilizer so it is set and forget while keeping flowers happy and healthy through the growing season. And they’ve thrived ever since.
🌸 Not Watering Well - Overwatering and underwatering were common issues I faced. I would either drown the plants or let them dry out completely. I learned to monitor the soil moisture levels regularly and adjust my watering schedule based on the specific needs of each plant. But the real game changer? Setting up drip irrigation set on timers.

Here are some additional tips I’ve learned from the past few years of winter sowing:
🌸Sow one type of seed per container – do not mix varieties. Label everything well with plant variety and the date sowed. Keep seed packets for easy reference. 🌸When to start depends on your zone and the type of seeds. I’m in zone 6b and generally start filling jugs, rotisserie chicken containers, and anything else I have laying around that can double as a mini-greenhouse in late Jan and early Feb. 🌸The potting soil you use matters! I love @coastofmaine Bar Harbor Blend. Moisten soil in a bucket before sowing. 🌸The seeds you use matter! I love @johnnnys_seeds. 🌸Label your seed jugs in two places to avoid confusion later! Stick a label inside to prevent fading from sunlight, and another on the outside for easy identification. Even if the outer label becomes hard to read, the inner one will stay clear. Trust me, you won't remember what's in each jug, so double labeling is the way to go! 🌸Set your containers together on the ground that has sun, rain, snow, etc. Check them once a week to make sure containers stay evenly moist. Normally, the jugs don’t need anything because the weather takes care of things. Add some moisture if dry. 🌸The seeds should sprout and be ready to plant in the spring when the weather warms up. 🌸Before planting, take the tape off and leave the jugs without tape for a day or 2 so you can open for a few days to get them used to the elements before planting. Do you remember way back when @hgtv used to have gardening programs on? Don’t you miss their garden programming? There was this one show called “A Gardeners Diary”…have you seen it before? One of the gardeners featured shared a tour of his gardens and described his attitude toward growing flowers and it really resonated with me.🌸
He spoke about the motel theory of gardening. And it goes like this…Our gardens are like a motel. Some plants check in, love it and stay. While others check in, don’t love it and leave. That literally changed my whole attitude toward growing things because it takes the stigma out of losing flowers and plants we want to grow but weren’t successful with. 🌸
And because this perspective really resonated with me, I have taken this with me throughout my gardening life. So the next time, you get down on yourself about that plant that didn’t do well, remember that plant just didn’t love it and left. 🌸

Here are 5 things I learned from mistakes I made winter sowing my cut flower garden. 1. Overwatering Containers Can Lead to Mold Why: Excess water combined with low airflow creates an ideal environment for fungi. Fix: Use containers with proper drainage holes and monitor soil moisture. Keep the soil damp, not soggy, when starting. 2. Using the Wrong Soil Can Hinder Seed Germination Why: Seeds in winter sowing need loose, well-draining soil to sprout, especially during freezing and thawing cycles. Fix: Opt for a potting mix that is peat-based or amended with perlite/vermiculite to improve drainage and reduce compaction. Avoid mixes with added fertilizer, as seeds don’t need nutrients until after they germinate. 3. Planting Seeds Too Deeply Can Delay or Prevent Germination Why: Seeds naturally emerge when exposed to the right depth and conditions. Planted too deeply, they either fail to emerge or take much longer. Fix: Follow the seed packet’s instructions on depth. For tiny seeds, surface-sow and gently press them into the soil. 4. Starting Too Early May Result in Premature Growth Why: Certain seeds sprout during a warm spell if sown too early, leaving them vulnerable to weather shifts. Fix: Research the types of seeds best suited for winter sowing (e.g., hardy perennials or cool-season annuals) and avoid starting overly tender varieties. 5. Forgetting to Label Containers Creates Confusion Why: Many seedlings look similar, making it challenging to plan your garden properly. Growth happens pretty fast in the spring. Before you know it, everything is leafed out and getting ready to bloom. If you live in an area where deer treat your garden more like a snack bar than the botanical paradise you’ve worked so hard to create, now is the time to protect your tulips! It’s a huge mistake to wait if your plants are just leafing out or breaking ground if you garden in an area with high deer pressure. 🌷
In my zone 6b garden, we get herds of deer on our property. And while some of our gardens are fenced in, most are not. So if I want to grow tulips, I’ve got to protect them.🌷
One of the ways I protect them is by using deer repellent. They are very effective if you use them aggressively, consistently, and often, depending on the severity of the issue in your garden. Because growth happens really FAST in spring, it’s important to begin spraying repellent as soon as your tulips break ground and follow up almost weekly until the plant is fully leafed out and blooms.🌷
The reason we need to apply the repellent so aggressively in the beginning is to teach deer they don’t want to snack in your garden. Deer are creatures of habit - they follow the same path so if they find something they love in your garden, they’ll keep coming back! So the idea is to make your plants so unpalatable that they will not love it and choose a different path. 🌷
It’s important to note that no method is foolproof because if deer are hungry enough they will eat anything, but I’ve found great success using certain repellents in addition to choosing deer resistant flowers. Have you ever aged clay pots? 🌸 The best way to age clay pots is to use them year after year after year. ⏰ They will just keep looking better and better. 💕 But limewashing will age them in a jiffy! It’s actually super easy 👏 and a great craft to do with your kids or grandkids because there’s no way to mess it up. 🥳 Sometimes I like to sand off more than I did in this reel to let more of the clay pot show through. 💛 You can get super particular with how you want it to look but honestly, it will look great no matter how you do it 🙌 so this is a great exercise in drop kicking perfectionism. 🥰 I like to seal the outside of the clay pot as well as the inside. 💕 I’ve found if I don’t seal the inside, the water will affect how it looks…and not always for the better.
