Especially when it came down to helping me with this. She’s a praying woman, so please 🙏🏾 She mentioned her father, River Willis, and the sticky stuff from a tree. I found his occupantion listed as turpentine tree worker. Along with another family member. Her story about her aunt Blanche led me to finding the kids she mentioned. That helped me get further along on my personal journey. Talk to your elders while they’re here. Spark up conversation about someone. Courts decided who belonged where, and for too many Black children, that meant being ‘bound out’. A system that put a facade of forced labor as “apprenticeships”. These children were taken from their families, sent to work for yt landowners, and often treated no better than they had been during slavery. Start with: 1️⃣ Freedmen’s Bureau Records – Look for labor contracts or apprenticeship disputes. Check FamilySearch or the National Archives. 2️⃣ County Court Records – Local courthouses in often documented binding contracts. Search probate or apprenticeship records. 3️⃣ Census Records (1870) - Bound out children may show up in the households of those who exploited their labor. My account has been deactivated for 3 days due to the mass harassment and the best thing y’all thought to do was call the cops? This is the second time in 2 years. Thee Rochester Police Department. And for you all who literally attacked the woman, who has stayed home with me during all this, to the point she deactivated her FB. For what? What does that get you? What is the end game? Y’all caused wayyyyy more harm in the last three weeks than she has in the last 12 years. Y’all caused actual harm to the Brister English Project. 3 years of hard work for y’all on messytok to try and end it over a 3month relationship and an out of context text. By someone who said they’ll ruin my reputation if they ever felt hurt as a “joke”. For someone who wanted to test drive polyamory by their rules. I was an experiment like I don’t have feelings. The police though? One of my biggest fears. Luckily they talked to me. Asked me if they needed to call FIT. I said yes. Thank god a Black woman showed up, told all three officers they could leave, and spoke to me like a human. Like a woman from my neighborhood. Now I have the biggest opportunities that will put me in the what someone would call the genealogy Super Bowl. Flown out to a place that has most of our records. My face and my story, our stories, on the biggest free genealogy platform. Presentation next month in town hall about the Project. Moving this to a location where I can affect reparations in a way you haven’t seen. On a scale you haven’t seen. So I’m going to get to this. Y’all cost me enough money, time, and energy already.
