I noticed Herbie Fox was spitting his food out some and leaving weird crumbled bits of kibble when he eats, so I was trying to get a video of his teeth to see if he was having a dental issue and it resulted in a pretty great ASMR video 😆 I couldn’t see anything significant going on with his mouth, but did catch sight of some dark spots on a couple teeth in a photo. I want to take a moment to publicly address an accusation that was made towards us today, regarding pretty miss Kiyomi. One of the new furfarm rescues. We had posted a video yesterday, telling a little bit about each of the new foxes as they are settling in here now. When we got to Kiyomi, we mentioned that our vet had assessed her foot, and determined it was an old injury that had healed badly. Her toes are dislocated from the rest of her foot. Our vet could not do anything to fix this. He advised that we could amputate, but since she walks on the foot, he did not recommend that at this time. Our vet said IF she begins to drag the foot or chew at it, etc. then at that point he would recommend amputation. He determined that she is not in pain, based on her lack of reaction to probing the area. She does limp a bit, or hold the paw up at times, but it is due to her accommodating for the poorly healed injury changing her anatomy, not due to current pain. We were accused of “trying to save money” by not providing her with proper medical care. They suggested that “larger organizations” who had recommended us would frown upon our choice. And suggested we were being dismissive of her needs. Anyone who follows us closely, probably knows that we provide our foxes with any veterinary care they need, and often we bring the foxes in for checkups just in case, when it is determined they don’t need any attention. We aren’t in the business of cutting corners here at Clevyr. We actually notified Saveafox of her injury the first day she arrived, in case they had more information. We filled them in on the vets determination the next day. They fully understood and were happy and supportive that she didn’t need medical intervention. We are GLAD when someone asks questions, you shouldn’t just blindly trust anything you see someone say on the internet, but this was not a case of asking questions. It was blatant accusations that we didn’t have the foxes best interest at heart. I don’t normally take things like this personally, but this particular accusation just didn’t sit right with me, and I wanted to address it publicly in case anyone else is doubting our motives. Hallux Fox is enjoying the sunshine this morning! Most the time our educational posts are mostly about domestic foxes, but today we’re going to talk about wild foxes and how they can be a benefit in their natural environment! Often farmers and even people who aren’t farmers villainize foxes and other predators out of fear of them harming their livestock, pets, or even themselves or their children. Today we want to talk about the benefits of a fox being around the neighborhood instead of the risks! If foxes are native to your environment, then they are filling a crucial role as a keystone species in the habitats around you. Where there are humans there are bound to be rodents. Rodents are a huge carrier and transmitter of disease. Foxes are a natural predator to these rodents! Foxes will almost totally decimate a rodent population with ease! They will also keep other small mammal populations in check, like rabbits. Killing predators causes prey populations to increase in number. Overpopulation can lead to insufficient resources, and eventually starvation. Overpopulation can even lead to diseases to more easily spread among the animals. As a whole overpopulation of any species can harm the environment in a variety of ways. It’s rare that predators become over populated, it is often prey species. Nature will keep itself in balance better if we do not interfere. Foxes are rarely a threat to pets. Red foxes weigh around 5-10 pounds typically in the wild. Cats are roughly equivalent sized and foxes won’t usually see them as a threat nor prey. There are exceptions to this though and caution should still be exercised and pets should be monitored outdoors. Alacades toe is healing nicely, and we will be off to the vet again, Monday to have his stitches removed. Thank you everyone who has donated toward our vet bills this month. We had more vet visits than usual with all the new foxes coming into our care and it means the world to us here at Clevyr that all of you helped us through this holiday season. We also were to very lucky to receive a few larger donations over the last month, to put toward our play yard and perimeter fencing for the facility. We’re off to the vet again this morning, with Alacade and Ryoku. We noticed blood in Ryoku ear yesterday, which is indicative of an ear infection. Alacade is fine, as far as we can tell but since we’re going anyways we’re bringing him along so our vet can check on his toe and be sure everything looks good still.
