Knowing it’s not a hallucination is very important to helping them. How we deal with hallucinations vs. illusions is very different. There are no words to describe the pain of losing you… 💔 My best friend, my role model, my reason why, & truly the best mom I could have ever asked for. Thank you for all for your support during this incredibly difficult time. The love that our tiktok community has shown us has truly changed our lives and I cannot thank you enough for allowing us to share my mom’s story, for creating space for us in your lives, and for always treating us like family. Every single one of you helped to make Mom’s life brighter. #fuckftd #FTD #mom #grief #griefandloss #frontotemporaldementia #frontotemporaldegeneration
Just a fun video to raise awareness about the gifts care partners and people with dementia tell us are the ones they most often are not thrilled with getting. This usually happens around gifts that are meant to provide care or help with daily tasks, because those affect their daily life in a profound way, and they want choice in those areas. What this really means is just ask before you get people gifts that provide care or other help, so you know if they want it and exactly what kind of the thing they want. And we love dementia friendly items like remotes, phones, and clocks, but we often hear that some people would prefer not to get those as surprise gifts. If you have gotten someone these gifts and the love them they, that’s awesome! This is just to share about asking first and personalizing care and gifts, which is a more person centered approach to care. #cna #cnalife #dementiaa #alzheimers #alzheimerscaregiver #dementiaawareness #dementiacaregiver #montessori #montessoridementiacare #lewybodydementia #frontotemporaldementia #accessibility #memorycare #alzheimerscare #homehealthcare #giftgiving #holidays #personcenteredcare
This is exactly what my brain sounds like since losing my mom.. grief sucks. I can’t pay attention to anything, I feel so lost and unsure what to do with myself on a day-to-day basis, I’m being distant, and have no energy or motivation to even leave the house. What do I do?? Other than get on medication bc I’ve tried 5 different ones at this point and nothing works... I want to be happy and ik my mom would want me to be too. #grief #loss #lossofaparent #griefjourney #lifeaftercaregiving #ftd #frontotemporaldementia
Here’s a little glimpse into what I do to support someone I love when they have visitors. This was from a visit at Thanksgiving! I know that surprises can be fun, but for someone with dementia, it adds another layer of confusion for those who are in the stage where recognition is difficult. There are certainly benefits to prepare them beforehand! In the comments below, tell us what you do when you know visitors are coming! #dementia #caregiver #alzheimers #dementiaawareness #dementiacare #caregiver #alzheimerssucks #vasculardementia #frontotemporaldementia #lewybodydementia #alzheimersfight #alzheimersdisease #dementiasucks #dementiasupport #caregiversupport #caregivers
This is a great example of how we need to keep our goal in mind to figure out how to deal with this kind of situation. The goal for Ann was peace and a stress-free life with as much joy as possible. Telling her the truth was causing her stress, grief, and pain. That’s not the goal. Once the script was changed, we ensured her peace again. You don’t have to lie, but sometimes you might. You just have to figure out… is it worth it? #dementia #caregiver #alzheimers #dementiaawareness #dementiacare #caregiver #alzheimerssucks #vasculardementia #frontotemporaldementia #lewybodydementia #alzheimersfight #alzheimersdisease #dementiasucks #dementiasupport #caregiversupport #caregivers
People with dementia remember emotional connection to us. This is why doing activities together is do important- whether it’s singing or brushing teeth or cooking, positive experiences of activities together creates memories. Even in dementia. Why? Emotional memory is stored differently than factual memory and emotional memory usually remains. Seeing someone’s eyes light up when they see you is the best gift in the world and I’m so grateful for the gifts these residents give me. ❤️ #cna #cnalife #dementiaa #alzheimers #alzheimerscaregiver #dementiaawareness #dementiacaregiver #montessori #montessoridementiacare #lewybodydementia #frontotemporaldementia #accessibility #memorycare #alzheimerscare #homehealthcare #agingparents
People often say “no,” even to something they like, when a task seems too complicated to them, or they feel the way we asked them was unkind. We want to make a more accessible environment so they can say “yes” to things they want to do. This video shows modifications for early dementia, but the Montessori process allows us to modify all the way through late stage dementia. Learn more about Montessori care in our newsletter! Saying someone “doesn’t seem like they have dementia” might sound like a compliment, but it can actually devalue their experience—and the experience of their caregiver. Dementia isn’t just about memory loss; it impacts behavior, perception, and much more. It’s important to acknowledge and respect the full experience of someone living with dementia, without undermining it. #DementiaAwareness #dementia #caregiver #alzheimers #dementiaawareness #dementiacare #caregiver #alzheimerssucks #vasculardementia #frontotemporaldementia #lewybodydementia #alzheimersfight #alzheimersdisease #dementiasucks #dementiasupport #caregiversupport #caregivers

“Testing” grandma is going to make her nervous, embarrassed, and will heap shame onto her if she doesn’t know new baby Jaxley’s name. This very first interaction could start the holiday off on the wrong foot. If you know a loved one is exhibiting some memory loss, take away the awkward, confrontational pop quiz and introduce yourself! Holidays can be over stimulating and stressful for a myriad of reasons. Part 1 of some guidelines to try when a person seems to have “incoherent speech.” And we put that in quotes because it’s not incoherent to them, it’s that we can’t always understand it. We want to normalize different ways of communicating. These options can help you start to understand what they are trying to tell you. This is part 1 in a series of different options you can try. #cna #cnalife #alf #dementia #alzheimers #alzheimerscaregiver #dementiaawareness #dementiacaregiver #montessori #montessoridementiacare #lewybodydementia #frontotemporaldementia #accessibility #memorycare #alzheimerscare #homehealthcare #dementiaactivities #seniorliving
When we are told to pass off “babbling” language as “just dementia” and there isn’t anything to do about it, we decrease a persons agency, dignity, and ability to communicate. Different communication aids like this are very helpful. There is a process to creating them and using them with someone, which you do need to learn. You can try just printing out some photos, but if it doesn’t work, then that probably means your person needs more of the accessible process to be able to sue them. Which we teach to families in the Care Partners House membership and to Professional carers in our Professionals course. You can join the membership any time and the next professionals course group starts Jan. 20, 2025. #cna #cnalife #alf #dementia #alzheimers #alzheimerscaregiver #dementiaawareness #dementiacaregiver #montessori #montessoridementiacare #lewybodydementia #frontotemporaldementia #accessibility #memorycare #alzheimerscare #homehealthcare #dementiaactivities #seniorliving
What questions do you have for us about dementia care? Leave them in the comments. We love sharing how dementia care can be done with dignity and compassion, while maintaining meaning and purpose for people with dementia. You can get these on @amazon and they are a great form of visual cuing (which is part of signage in dementia care) for people who have trouble seeing. These, combined with the Montessori process of teaching someone with dementia how to do a task, is a great way to help maintain independence and reduce agitation in Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. #cna #cnalife #visualimpairment #dementiaa #alzheimers #alzheimerscaregiver #dementiaawareness #dementiacaregiver #montessori #montessoridementiacare #lewybodydementia #frontotemporaldementia #accessibility #memorycare #alzheimerscare #homehealthcare #sandwichgeneration #agingparents #caregiver #carepartner
@playouisi is one of our favorite games for people with dementia, and personally as a family. It’s a great dementia activity that can be played one-to-one, or in a group. We like the OuiSinoes version of the game (like dominoes) because it is open-ended and there is no right or wrong way to play it. This makes it not only a lot of fun for people with dementia, but a lot less intimidating and more accessible. There are a few ways to make it even more accessible if your person with dementia is struggling with working memory and/or knowing the steps to an activity. Here are three Montessori dementia care tips that can make the game more accessible for people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. #cna #cnalife #dementia #alzheimers #alzheimerscaregiver #dementiaawareness #dementiacaregiver #montessori #montessoridementiacare #lewybodydementia #frontotemporaldementia #memorycare #alzheimerscare #homehealthcare #playouisi #sandwichgeneration
Here is some general information to help understand how to handle when you disagree with a decision your person with dementia has made. This is for informational use only. This is not legal or medical advice. You must work with your own lawyer and doctor to know what is right for your person and their legal right and yours. From the non-legal and non-medical side of care, one thing you can start doing is building trust with them so you know what they want and you can be more of a team going forward. #cna #cnalife #alf #dementia #alzheimers #alzheimerscaregiver #dementiaawareness #dementiacaregiver #montessori #montessoridementiacare #lewybodydementia #frontotemporaldementia #accessibility #memorycare #alzheimerscare #homehealthcare #dementiaactivities #seniorliving
Is praise helpful to people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias? It depends. We want to look at: 1. Person: Their past experience with praise and any trauma around praise- too much, or lack of praise. 2. Purpose: Why are we praising? Do they need, like, or want it? 3. Role: What role do they see themselves in and you in. They may like praise from some people with certain roles, and not other. Again trauma can come up here to, especially in families. I hope this helps! I really like @drbeckyatgoodinside video on praise that you can find on YouTube, for kids and adults! #cna #cnalife #dementiaa #Alzheimer’s #alzheimerscaregiver #dementiaawareness #dementiacaregiver #montessori #montessoridementiacare #lewybodydementia #frontotemporaldementia #accessibility #memorycare #alzheimerscare #homehealthcare
