Meet our newest arrival named “Rags.” Rags is a ragdoll mix 11-week old kitten, and was found living outside of a motel in Holly Hill with a bad case of scabies. If left untreated, scabies can kill a cat (more about this below and what it is). Rags is such a sweet boy and purrs like CRAZY once you pet him. He LOVES to play with other cats or with any string/ball toy. He is doing great with treatment and is in great hands with our foster Candace. FELINE SCABIES is a contagious parasitic skin disease caused by the obligate parasite Notoedres cati, a mite that can only survive a few days off the host. Scabies (mange) has symptoms of scabs or flaky skin, typically starting around the edges of the ears or tail (as we showed in video). But other symptoms include: Intense itching Skin flaking Hair loss Inflammation Scabies CAN BE EASILY treated even if you can’t get close to the cat. It’s been over 2 months since we shared an update on Dovey’s progress. (Her initial story down below). I have dealt with a few harder cases in my 15 years of rescue, but never a cat that was so incredibly unpredictable. Dovey just wants to be loved and be pet, but the smallest wrong move can trigger her to lash out in an aggressive way of biting, clawing, and hissing . After she stayed with us a week, the awesome Randie asked if she could give her a try as she has worked with many feral and aggressive cats in the past (and still does). OF COURSE, we took her up on this opportunity. It’s been almost 2 1/2 months now, and although the foster has got to understand her triggers more clearly, she again, is just super unpredictable. We have gotten her off all dry food (why so many cats get dehydration related health issues) and only eating Fancy Feast chicken pate wet food 2 times a day. Her fur is softer now. But we are trying to figure out her next home as she is just not a good candidate to go back up for adoption. HER STORY IF JUST NOW SEEING THIS: 2 years ago, Dovey was a baby kitten, who was rescued from living on a filthy trailer porch & known as being a part of the “Trailer 3” litter. She was adopted for a Christmas gift for a girlfriend, but after 2 year, a marriage, and the arrival of a new baby, Dovey is now returned back to our rescue 😟. His life before ending up in this box was... terrible =-( But, his delivery in that box from the shelter signifies a brand new beginning for him. Meet Mongoose. Mongoose ended up at the emergency clinic the weekend before Christmas. He had a cold, and it was suspected that he was hit by a car. His mouth was full of inflammation, and he had MANY broken teeth. His ears were flattened to his head, most likely from ear infections or cat fight wounds that had never been treated. He is FIV positive (weakened immune system but can live a normal life just like nonFIV cats). Once stable, he was transferred to the county shelter. We saw him posted on the missing pet site where volunteers post local animals currently at the shelter, and well, it was love at first site. Mongoose had all of his teeth removed last week, and during that surgery it was noted that he also has stenotic nares (narrow nostrils). This is often seen in animals that have "smooshed" noses...like pugs, Boston Terriers, Persians, and Scottish Folds. We can hear Mongoose breathing louder than a normal cat, but it doesn't seem like he's struggling to breathe. Regardless, we are getting him to see the vet ASAP to have a recheck on his mouth and to look more closely at the stenotic nares. Sometimes they can be improved with surgery, so we will see what we can do to help him. He's the sweetest, most loving cat. Geez...only thing I'm missing is a family of my own. Maybe today will be the best day...and someone will decide to adopt me! Hope everyone is staying warm out there as “Shakes” our CH kitten (otherwise known as Wobbly kitten syndrome) surely is! He just loves snuggling with my daughter every single night. Shakes has definitely become part of our family, temporarily, and we are loving every second of it! Shakes NEVER stops purring & loves other animals! My daughter Winter has made me promise to NOT rehome him till after this Christmas break (which is almost ending), so he is here to stay till then. Soon we will be looking for a very special home for this very special kitten where he has a safe indoor only home with a younger cat to attack 😉 & a family to love on him. With LOTS AND LOTS of wet food! If you are just now meeting our Shakes, I figured we would tell you more about him. He has cerebellar hypoplasia, otherwise known as wobbly kitten syndrome. This is a condition in which the cerebellum, the part of the brain that is responsible for coordination and balance, does not develop properly. It results in cats that have exaggerated movements of their legs and head, as those movements are normally controlled by the cerebellum. There are different severities of this condition, and Shakes is definitely blessed to have the lesser version! We had heard the area where Mongoose was picked up is a very bad area for cats. We feared he would be returned to field there (rtf- a practice where cats are returned outside where they were found- or any random outdoor location 😫). But, it's worse than we feared. During the exam yesterday with Dr Nancy, a pellet was found in his chest. Mongoose was shot at some point in his life. And, he was hit by a car last month. Unfortunately, we doubt this was an accident as residents there purposely try to harm the cats with their vehicles. His life has been sad and terrible. But, that life is something he'll never know again. ------------ Mongoose was taken to the ER in December with a kitty cold, after someone had seen him getting hit by a car. Poor Mongoose tumbled after being struck and then scurried into the woods. A kind woman who traps cats found him in the woods and got him help (Thank you Dottie!). He was later transferred to the county shelter. Mongoose had major infection and inflammation in his mouth, but no major damage from the car accident. All of his remaining teeth were removed. He also has stenotic nares, which means his nostril openings are smaller than the average cat. His ears are flattened to his head, most likely from untreated infections and cat fight wounds. He is FIV positive (weakened immune system but can live a long, healthy life just like nonFIV cats). She then ended up in the unadoptable area at the shelter as she was fearful and acting out. We rescued her and worked with her for several months.
