In almost every consultation call I have for my group coaching program Binge Eating Unchained, the person I’m chatting with says, “I genuinely love eating healthy.” And it always catches me a little off guard because I’m like, “Wait, never ever did I say you couldn’t eat healthy and heal.” I think there’s this massive misconception that to recover, you have to give up health. That caring about nutrition or wanting to feel good in your body suddenly has to go out the window. That’s not true. Not even a little bit. But here’s the thing—if you’re struggling with binge eating, I’d bet money you’ve got a pretty rigid view of health. And that? That’s what we shift in recovery. Because as @thedailyvictorian so perfectly said: “You can take all the supplements, work out every day, and eat the ‘perfect’ diet, but if you can’t take a break from all that stuff without hating yourself, you are NOT healthy.” (Seriously, sit with that for a second.) I will die on this hill: Health isn’t just about what you eat or how much you exercise. Health is also the freedom to actually live your life. To skip a workout because you’re tired and not feel guilty. To eat the cookie just because it’s there and sounds good, not because you’ve ‘earned’ it. To trust that your body will survive a meal that doesn’t include a single green thing. When you’re healing from binge eating, the goal isn’t to throw out healthy habits—it’s to redefine them. To expand the definition of health so it doesn’t suffocate you with rules. So no, it’s not that you can’t eat healthy when you’re recovering. It’s about making sure your version of health doesn’t come with chains. Because true health? It’s freedom.
