So what makes Hermès marbling so special? Unlike typical marbling which uses dye in water, this uses dye in a starch/clay which allows the only artist still practicing this technique to create those crisp shapes we recognize on Hermès marbled silk. This marbled silk is created by Kyoto Marble. Hermès had a marbled silk sample book in their archives and decided that they wanted to create scarves with this technique and instead of replicating themselves they went on a multi-year journey to find the creator. It’s a family owned business with only one member who knows the craft, and that is Moriyosi Nose. She is wearing a 140cm shawl in Cashmere/silk blend in the Hermès Early America pattern. This is the first version of this scarf because in 1981 Martha and George Washington were added to the center and it’s actually much more rare to find the version without them. And I do have an exact match to her scarf coming to my scarf store! Second we have Garcelle Beauvais in this pre-housewives photo and she is wearing Hermès Varangues in a silk 90cm. Third we have a photo from Dr. Nichole Martin’s page and she is wearing Hermès The Savana Dance in a 140cm Washed Silk version. Fourth we have Sutton Stracke who brought this Cashmere Hermès shawl to the beach. It has beautiful leather fringe and I have it in my personal collection too! The first 6 things I looks for when authenticating a scarf. Now, I will preface this by saying these details are very obvious which is what made it such a great example for this video. The differences were very clear, but most of the time the details are quite the opposite. Just one small copyright stamp can be slightly out of place or the color registration (how the colors line up) may be slightly off. I can make a follow up video with some more subtle examples next. My limited edition, special edition, Hermès scarf. Well, one of them at least :) This scarf is Pele-Mele by Thibaut Huchard and was released for Fall Winter 2024. It’s funny what catches your eye when you go in-store because I admittedly scrolled past this one without even seeing the buckle, which I ended up loving. It's super easy and it just involves a regular knot to attach them all together! Today I'm using "In The Pocket" by Leigh P. Cooke and "En Liberte" by Carine Brancowitz with so many adorable dogs at Villa Borghese. There are so many ways to wear a scarf as a top even in the winter and this first style is one of my favorites, especially with this style of scarf since it shows both sides. Next we can wrap the scarf around the neck to show both sides in this more undone casual look. For the third look we are going in the opposite direction with a very intentional more formal look with a little gathered flower at the side that shows the reverse side of the scarf for a contrast pop of color. Such a versatile beauty. When you really become familiar with the artist, you’ll be able to recognize their styles, just like you’d recognize the difference between let’s say, Picasso or Mary Cassatt. So many of the artists have their own work outside the company, where naturally that signature style continues. In the case of Francois Houtin, he happens to have many incredible etchings very similar to a bunch of his designs for Hermès. I was SO happy when I found this little garden folly from his “Cabanes de Jardinier” series that looked exactly like his Hermès scarf, Les Cabanes.
