So what makes Hermès marbling so special? Unlike typical marbling which uses dye in water, this uses dye in a starch/clay which allows the only artist still practicing this technique to create those crisp shapes we recognize on Hermès marbled silk. This marbled silk is created by Kyoto Marble. Hermès had a marbled silk sample book in their archives and decided that they wanted to create scarves with this technique and instead of replicating themselves they went on a multi-year journey to find the creator. It’s a family owned business with only one member who knows the craft, and that is Moriyosi Nose.
