Kim and I have been talking about this moment for months. I sat there so nervous, waiting to hear who was chosen. I didn’t realize how closely my kids were watching everything I do, but after reading what my son wrote, it’s clear they’re paying attention to more than I realize. 2024 wasn’t an easy year for my kids and me, as most of you know, because I’ve shared a lot of what we’ve been through. But today, I was awarded ACO of the Year, and that means so much to me. I want to thank the twenty people who took the time to write small or even crazy nominations, and a huge thank you to the twelve people who wrote thoughtful, meaningful ones. I’ve poured blood, sweat, and tears (literally all three 😂😭) into this job, and while I still struggle with shutting off, I’m working on becoming a better partner and mother. This job is far from cute puppies and kittens, as I’ve explained before. I’ve even gotten in trouble for sharing the less glamorous side of it, but it’s important for the community to understand what we go through every day. I really hope that one day, Animal Control will be recognized and appreciated for all that we do—not just for the negative aspects. 2024 was one of the most challenging years of my life. I faced mental and physical struggles that no one should ever have to endure. In March, the love of my life relocated for an incredible career opportunity, which, at the time, felt like the beginning of an even bigger upheaval. By April, it felt like my world was falling apart, and I couldn’t imagine it getting any worse. After multiple hospital stays and some close calls, I reached a point where I was ready to give up. Then came June and July, with a dog bite incident and my kids almost losing their dad. It truly felt like the worst year of my life. I couldn't wait for 2024 to end. Yet, despite everything, I’m incredibly grateful to have spent the end of the year surrounded by family in Washington.
