Catherine told Troy she dropped the children off at daycare, but when it was time to pick them up, Troy said she couldn’t tell him where they were. After hours of driving from place to place searching for Sarah and Jacob, Troy said he and Catherine stopped at a fast-food restaurant. While he waited in the car, Catherine went inside, then slipped out the back door. Troy said when he realized she had taken off, he called police and reported all three of them missing: Catherine, Sarah and Jacob. Several days later Catherine was found wandering the streets of Germantown, Maryland. Police arrested her. The children were nowhere to be found and are still missing today. Even though the children are still missing, their mother was charged with murder, but a judge found her not competent to stand trial and ordered her to a maximum-security psychiatric hospital, where she remains today. JEFFREY DUPRES Jeffrey Dupres vanished on April 24, 1980 in the town of Slave Lake, about 200 kilometres north of Edmonton. Jeffrey was three when he was playing in his front yard, and got permission from his mom to go see a friend next door. He was last seen wearing a long-sleeve beige shirt with brown trim, rust-coloured pants and dark brown orthopedic shoes. The then 26-year-old mother went downstairs in the family’s home to flip the laundry into the dryer when a knock at the door got her attention — it was the neighbour child Jeffrey was supposed to be playing with. He was looking for his friend. The mother started looking for her son everywhere, checking with neighbours, and then she called the RCMP. On Wednesday, the RCMP said on that day — April 24, 1980 — the detachment was dealing with a wildfire forcing evacuations of the northern Alberta town when McKee contacted them. “The officer on duty responded and began making inquiries in the neighbourhood, checking Mrs. Dupree’s residence, her yard and any areas where Jeffrey had last been seen,” said Chief Supt. Gary Graham. Graham is the officer in charge of eastern Alberta for the RCMP. He said over the next week, the community of Slave Lake was searched five times — on foot and by air. Over the decades, a number of tips came in — but never what investigators needed to crack the case of the missing toddler. “Nothing substantial and nothing that would give us hope that we could bring the investigation to a resolution,” Graham said. Jeffrey’s mom has long felt she was the primary suspect after being questioned and even asked to take a polygraph test. BLESSING AOCI An Amber Alert has been issued for a girl in Rock Island, illinois Thursday morning. Four-year-old Blessing Aoci was in the booster seat of her mother's car when someone stole the car at about 6 a.m. in the intersection of 14 Street and 13th Avenue, according to an Amber Alert issued by Illinois State Police. The vehicle was recovered a short time later at 9th Street and 14th Avenue and the child was still missing, police said. AMBER HAGERMAN The Amber alert was created in reference to Amber Rene Hagerman, who was abducted and later found murdered on January 17, 1996. On that day, Jan. 13, 1996, Amber was grabbed off her bike – kicking and screaming – by a stranger in a black truck in the parking lot of an abandoned Winn-Dixie. The man, either white or Hispanic, waited until Amber’s 5-year-old brother, Ricky, had left on his bike, heading back to their grandparents’ house. They’d been told just to ride their bikes around the block but were drawn to the nearby parking lot with the cool ramp. Amber’s body was discovered in a creek four days later and about four miles away. Today, Jan. 13, 2025, marks 29 years since Amber was abducted and murdered in a case that shook the nation and changed the way we search for abducted children. Her body was found four days after she was grabbed off her pink bicycle. Her killer has never been found. They asked for the public’s help, offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and established a special tipline. For the first time, they released photos taken after her body was found in a creek, hoping someone will remember something and come forward. Police are hoping advancements in technology will help them solve the case and will be submitting the small sample of DNA they collected at the crime scene. Police believe Amber was kept alive for at least two days, so they’re convinced someone must have seen something during that time. Her body was dumped in a creek behind an apartment complex, spotted by a man walking his dog. A man who lived across from the Winn-Dixie, and has since died, witnessed the abduction through a chain-link fence. He told police he had seen the little girl riding her bike and then saw the man, in his 20s or 30s, throw her in his truck as she kicked and screamed. He said the suspect was medium build and less than 6-feet-tall. He had brown or black hair. The black pickup truck had a single cab, with no chrome or striping, and was in good condition. MICHAEL JOSEPH VAUGHAN Michael was last seen near his home in the area of Southwest 9th Street and Arizona in Fruitland, Idaho on July 27, 2021. He was last seen sometime between 6:40 and 7:00 p.m., and his family notified police of his disappearance at 7:21. He has never been heard from again and extensive searches of the area have turned up no indication of his whereabouts. In November 2022, police searched the residence of Sarah Wondra, who lived with her husband Stacey on Redwing Street about four minutes from Michael's home, and excavated her yard. Before the search was over, they arrested Sandra and charged her with felony failure to report a death in Michael's disappearance. Failure to report a death can be either a misdemeanor or a felony in Idaho. For it to be a felony, the person being charged must have not reported the death with the intent to prevent discovery of the manner of death. Police stated she told them she "definitely did not kill that boy" but that "the most high God just told me that Stacey was the one who killed him and buried him" in the backyard by the shed. She later charged her story and said a man named Adrian had killed Michael. At her initial court hearing, Sarah was found unfit to stand trial in Michael's death. She was committed to the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare for mental health treatment and will be evaluated again in 90 days. She faces up to ten years in jail. Stacey has not faced any charges in Michael's case, but he is in custody on unrelated charges. Investigators believe Michael was initially buried on the Wondras' property after his death, but that his body was moved to another location at a later date. No one else has been charged in Michael's case, but authorities said they believe other people besides Sarah know what happened to him. They identified two people, Brandon Shurtliff and Adrian Lucienne, who may have firsthand knowledge of the crime. Both of them lived in the Wondras' home at the time of Michael's disappearance.
