‼️ Very important information about laminitis and founder in horses When it comes to horses, is there such a thing as feeding too much grass? Let’s talk about too much grass and high sugar intake when feeding horses, and the possibility of laminitis and founder. The best way to tell if a horse is getting enough food and nutrition is by their body condition. Horse owners should change their horses diets and amounts of food including grain and forage according to the seasons and how much grass is in the pasture especially if horses are turned out to pasture most or all of the time. When spring comes so does the new grass which can be rich with sugar. Horses that are easy keepers or keep weight on easily can gain weight quickly at this time of the year which increases their chances of contracting laminitis which can develop into founder. Grain amounts usually are decreased at this time of the year, especially if you notice your horse putting on weight. Laminitis is when the laminae which hold the hoof wall and interior structures of the hoof swell. This can cause the hoof wall to separate from the interior structures of the hoof. This is laminitis which is a very painful condition. There is a tendon called the deep digital flexor tendon that runs down the back of the leg to the bottom of the coffin bone which is a triangular shaped bone in the bottom of the hoof. When laminitis occurs the DDFT can pull on the coffin bone and cause it to rotate and point downward toward the hoof sole. This is founder. If the coffin bone goes through the hoof sole that is the end of that horse. During the winter months if your pastures have grasses or forage that will go dormant in cold weather hay and grain portions should be increased, but always keep an eye on your horse's body condition to make sure you do not increase grain too much especially if you have a horse that is an easy keeper. #americandreamfarm #horse #horsetok #horsecare #horsecaretips #onthisday #founder #laminitis #laminitisprevention #horsegirl #learnabouthorses #horsesoftiktok #learn #learnfromme #horselife #horseproblems
