It wasn't what she said that stung, it was the certainty in which she said it. Loch was five at the time and I sat there holding back tears in that doctor's office. I wasn't sad because I thought he would be more valuable if he could walk up stairs. It made me sad because no one should put assumptions on a child's potential, especially mine. Our story is living proof that the medical community has been wrong even if the outcome is atypical. Sure, maybe he is unlikely to walk up stairs…but that doesn’t mean he won’t. What I would have preferred to hear is this, "Lochlan is following the trend of kiddos that need support to walk up stairs." We have never put expectations on any of our children. We only do all in our power to help them reach their full potential, whatever that looks like. And I will admit, watching him take his first steps up a couple stairs feels pretty good. I am sure happy I didn't take that doctor's words to heart.
