D’WAN SIMS D'Wan's mother, D'Wanna (who had the last name Harris in 1994 and was later known by her married name of D'Wanna Wiggins), told authorities that her son disappeared while shopping with her at The Wonderland Mall in Livonia, Michigan on December 11, 1994. D'Wanna stated her son was walking along the corridor between the Target store and the main area of the shopping mall with her when he suddenly vanished at approximately 2:30 p.m. D'Wan has never been heard from again. D'Wanna has maintained her innocence and said in 1995 that she was in therapy to deal with her son's disappearance. She was never been charged in connection with her D'Wan's case due to lack of evidence, and no suspects have been identified. Her mother said D'Wanna was emotionally devastated by her son's disappearance. He had a life insurance policy taken out by his grandmother, but his grandmother said it was for D'Wan's college education and his mother didn't even know about it. D'Wan's father passed a polygraph in his son's disappearance and isn't considered a suspect. He said he believed D'Wanna was a good mother. In the years following D'Wan's disappearance, his mother moved to Durham, North Carolina. She was living with her husband and children when she died there in 2020. MELISSA BRANNEN Melissa was last seen at a holiday party in the Woodside Apartment Clubhouse, at approximately 10:00 p.m. on December 3, 1989 in Lorton, Virginia. Her family resided in the apartment complex. Melissa and her mother were about to leave the party but Melissa went to get some more potato chips before they left, and was never seen again. There were approximately eighty guests present at the party at the time. Caleb Daniel Hughes emerged as a suspect in Melissa's case almost immediately. Hughes was employed as a groundskeeper at Woodside Apartments at the time of Melissa's disappearance; he had worked there for only about two weeks. He was a guest at Melissa's family's party the evening of her disappearance, had been sitting near her when she was last seen, and left at approximately the same time the child was discovered missing. He had a criminal record prior to Melissa's disappearance, but not for violent or sexual offenses. Investigators looked for Hughes right after Melissa's disappearance was discovered, but did not find him until 1:00 a.m. the next day. He had already put his party clothes in the washing machine. The FBI took blood, hair and fiber evidence from Hughes's maroon Honda and tested it in a forensic laboratory. The laboratory found that Melissa could be a source for the hair and the bloodstains, which were found on some tissues in the car, but so could 40% of the general population. Further testing ruled out Melissa as a source for the stains. However, rabbit hairs found in the car matched Melissa's rabbit-fur jacket and there were many blue fibers that matched her sweater and some red fibers consistent with her skirt. Hughes was convicted of abducting Melissa with the intent to defile in 1991, and sentenced to 50 years in prison. He has always maintained his innocence in Melissa's case. He was an exemplary prisoner for most of his term, and accumulated enough good behavior credits to shorten his sentence. As a result, he was released from prison in August 2019, after serving just 29 years of his sentence. Two other men were convicted of attempting to extort ransom money from Melissa's mother shortly after her daughter's disappearance. The individuals were not connected to her actual abduction. MICHAEL VAUGHAN Michael was last seen near his home in the area of Southwest 9th Street and Arizona in Fruitland, Idaho on July 27, 2021. He was last seen sometime between 6:40 and 7:00 p.m., and his family notified police of his disappearance at 7:21. He has never been heard from again and extensive searches of the area have turned up no indication of his whereabouts. In November 2022, police searched the residence of Sarah Wondra, who lived with her husband Stacey on Redwing Street about four minutes from Michael's home, and excavated her yard. Before the search was over, they arrested Sandra and charged her with felony failure to report a death in Michael's disappearance. Failure to report a death can be either a misdemeanor or a felony in Idaho. For it to be a felony, the person being charged must have not reported the death with the intent to prevent discovery of the manner of death. Police stated she told them she "definitely did not kill that boy" but that "the most high God just told me that Stacey was the one who killed him and buried him" in the backyard by the shed. She later charged her story and said a man named Adrian had killed Michael. At her initial court hearing, Sarah was found unfit to stand trial in Michael's death. She was committed to the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare for mental health treatment and will be evaluated again in 90 days. She faces up to ten years in jail. Stacey has not faced any charges in Michael's case, but he is in custody on unrelated charges. Investigators believe Michael was initially buried on the Wondras' property after his death, but that his body was moved to another location at a later date. No one else has been charged in Michael's case, but authorities said they believe other people besides Sarah know what happened to him. They identified two people, Brandon Shurtliff and Adrian Lucienne, who may have firsthand knowledge of the crime. Both of them lived in the Wondras' home at the time of Michael's disappearance. SARAH AND JACOB HOGGLE Sarah and Jacob were last seen in the care of their mother, Catherine Hoggle, on Labor Day weekend 2014. Catherine told Troy she dropped the children off at daycare, but when it was time to pick them up, Troy said she couldn’t tell him where they were. After hours of driving from place to place searching for Sarah and Jacob, Troy said he and Catherine stopped at a fast-food restaurant. While he waited in the car, Catherine went inside, then slipped out the back door. Troy said when he realized she had taken off, he called police and reported all three of them missing: Catherine, Sarah and Jacob. ARIANNA FITTS Arianna's mother, 32-year-old Nicole Fitts, disappeared from San Francisco, California on April 1, 2016. She was last seen after her shift at Best Buy on Harrison Street that day. Later in the day, she exchanged text messages with relatives, saying she was going to Fresno, California with a friend named "Sam." Her family was puzzled by this, as Nicole didn't know anyone named Sam and she didn't have a car. In the early morning hours of April 2, there was a post to Nicole's Facebook reading, "Spending time with my 3 year old need this brake." Her family doesn't think she actually wrote it; Arianna was two, not three, and Nicole wrote with good grammar and spelling. Nicole has never been heard from again. Her family reported her missing on April 5; they said they couldn't find Arianna either. On April 8, Nicole's body was found in a shallow grave in McLaren Park, covered by a piece of plywood with a symbol spray-painted on it. Photos of Nicole and the plywood are posted with this case summary. After Nicole was found murdered, police announced they thought Arianna was at risk. Nicole, a single mother, was struggling financially prior to her death. She spent a period living in a homeless shelter and had sent her older daughter to live with the child's father in Southern California. While in the shelter, Nicole met a "street pastor" named Lemasani Briggs, who invited her and Arianna to live with her. Nicole paid Briggs money for rent and for babysitting Arianna, but after a few months she switched babysitters to Siolo Hearne, Briggs's niece. According to Nicole's sister, Briggs was abusive to Nicole, never gave her a key to their shared residence, read her private diary and sent her text messages calling her names. Nicole's sister and a friend helped Nicole and Arianna escape the situation, picking them up from Briggs's house in November 2015 and taking her to their home in Santa Cruz, California. After Nicole moved to Santa Cruz, commuted two hours each way to her job at Best Buy. She worked long hours and stayed with various friends. She often left Arianna with Siolo Hearne and Helena Martin, Briggs's nieces, as well as Helena's husband, Devin Martin. The Martins lived on Castro Street in Oakland, California. A coworker offered Nicole and Arianna a place to stay, but Arianna's babysitters did not want to let her go and wouldn't even let Nicole see her. No one in Arianna's family had seen her since sometime in mid-February 2016, about six weeks before her mother's murder. According to Nicole's roommate, Nicole planned to try to retrieve her daughter on the day she disappeared. Nicole was reportedly very upset because she hadn't been able to see her, and her roommate urged her to seek help from the police to get her back. Police stated Hearne and the Martins were refusing to cooperate with the investigation and had provided inconsistent statements, and it's worth noting that Helena previously served a six-year prison term for killing the father of her child. They haven't been named as suspects in Nicole's homicide or Arianna's disappearance, however. Arianna's family hopes she is still alive and being cared for. Prior to Nicole's death, she and Arianna frequented the San Francisco, San Mateo, Oakland, Emeryville, Fresno, Santa Cruz and the Silicon Valley areas of the state; investigators believe Arianna could be anywhere in California. The number of young children who still walk to and from school isn’t as significant as in the 1980s. It was common for kids to foot their way around their neighborhoods, and that’s exactly what six-year-old Michael Mayfield and his sister, five-year-old Pamela Mayfield, did on January 10, 1985. According to reports, Michael and Pamela were students at Betsy Ross Elementary School. The siblings were enrolled in a kindergarten class because it was decided Michael would repeat his year. For some unknown reason, it was said that Michael was deemed too young the first time around. The siblings attended school on January 10 and walked home together—something they’d done numerous times. They were spotted playing together at a local park, and witnesses claimed to have seen them getting into a green car. Others reportedly saw the siblings in the backseat. NORA JUDKINS A man accused of taking a 3-year-old girl, triggering an Amber Alert Tuesday morning, now faces charges of domestic violence and making a false alarm. In all, he's charged with one count of strangulation, one count of domestic violence, one count of making a false alarm and one count of theft. A grand jury could choose to indict him on additional charges. According to court documents, Judkins allegedly strangled a woman until she was unconscious, kicked her in the chest and told the woman "he had stolen and killed the victim's daughter while knowing she was safe." Court documents also say Judkins stole the woman's phone and tablet. An Amber Alert was issued early Tuesday morning for a missing 3-year-old girl. Police said they believed the girl was taken by Judkins. Police found the toddler safe in Roselawn and she was reunited with her mother around 5:30 a.m. that same morning. By 2022, however, Catherine was still mentally incompetent to stand trial, and due to the passage of time the murder charges against her had to be dismissed. The judge who dismissed the charges ordered that Catherine should remain confined in the hospital under a civil commitment order, as she is considered a danger to herself and others. Her diagnoses are schizophrenia, major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder. Although police believe Catherine murdered her children, there is no evidence to indicate their whereabouts. She has told the staff at the hospital that her children are safe, but she continues to refuse to reveal their location. A private firm investigating the case DeOrr Kunz, who's been missing for more than a year, says a jacket that he reportedly was wearing on the day he went missing was found at an Idaho Falls apartment complex. The firm says investigators searched leftover furniture and clothing at the apartment complex on the 900 block of Ada in Idaho Falls after the couple was evicted for not paying rent. The landlord, the firm says, gave investigators the OK to search the abandoned property. Found in the search include four matchbox cars that were previously described by the parents as "missing and they did not know where they were," as well as a camo jacket, that boy's parents say he was wearing on the day he went missing, according to the report. In addition to the toys and jacket, Klein says it found a credit card that was used by a family friend with "seemingly purchases of items unknown to investigators in testimony." An insurance tracking device box along with instructions was also found. The firm says all of the evidence was turned over to the Lemhi County Sheriff's Office. Last month, during a five-day search of the area, a trained cadaver dog hit on five different targets, including a site about 3/4 of a mile from the Leodore campground. "Investigators believe this site may have been a 'holding site' for some type of human body," according to the Klein report. No other evidence was found at the site.
