No one prepares us for the speed at which puberty comes at us, as parents. One day she is our sweet little girl and the next day she has unpredictable moods and starts pulling away! It’s tempting to just increase limits and punishments to try to pull her back to that sweet girl - but this actually works in the opposite way we want it to. It can feel confusing and overwhelming but under it all she is still that little girl that needs us! In order to help her slow down long enough for us to catch up try these 3 things: 👉 1- get curious and listen… Even if she isn’t sharing much, the fact that you are there, curious about her feelings and activities and actively listening to her thoughts and ideas creates a safe and trusting space for her to be open when she needs to! 👉 2- Ask her to teach you Yes… they need to have correct information but when we come at her with a correction first without getting curious to let her teach us what she has learned it feels to her like we invalidated her knowledge and defensiveness will Be the response! Imstead, use the simple phrase … “Tell me more” and follow up later with your experience after she has shared hers 👉 3- Explain the WHY behind your decisions When they know the why behind your reasoning it goes further than you know - that doesn’t mean they have Tom agree. They can still be angry and upset with the decision but when you share the why it moves the plane from YOU to the reason. Don’t be afraid to hear them out on the subject When you include these 3 things she feels heard, seen, and understood so she will more often than not slow a little for you to join her on this road she’s running on! #nurturinggirls #raisingteengirls #raisingdaughters #parentinggirls #momsoftweensandteens #momsofteengirls #raisinggirls #raisingteendaughters #momsoftweengirls #parentingteengirls
