To all the Roald Dahl fans… I’m sorry. Roald Dahl was a pilot and intelligence officer in the RAF, and that’s how he encountered Douglas Bisgood while they were on the same flight one day. Bisgood’s son Michael said this about his dad: “He wrote his original story about the gremlins while convalescing in a hospital bed in August 1940. Note please that my father's name was Douglas and he was called 'Gus' by his comrades [Gus is the name of the main character in the book]. My mother was called Fifinella in the photographs in the family album. [the name of the female gremlin] He wrote his version of The Gremlins describing how they helped him get fit enough to pass the medical required to fly again. This was the story he told Dahl on the ship. According to my mother, he always regretted telling HIS story to Dahl and claimed that Dahl hardly changed his original story at all.” Dahl went on to publish such acclaimed works as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, The BFG, and Matilda. He was a good author in his own right, but the first story he “wrote” wasn’t really his 😬 As a side note, Mr. Toad did end up in a package film, but not the Three Fabulous Characters. The Mickey and the Beanstalk ended up part of Fun and Fancy Free (two years before The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad), and Walt decided not to pursue the Gremlins because they couldn’t copyright the concept and the RAF wanted script approval. #roalddahl #books #disneyhistory #disneysecrets #disneyfacts #disneytea #disneytrivia #mrtoad #mrtoadswildride #disneyrides #disneyparks #disney #thegremlins #gremlin #disneyanimation #disneystudios #disneyland #disneynerd #waltdisney #disneybooks #booknerd #disneyfan #disneyfans #disneymovies #disneymovie #disneyfilm #theadventuresofichabodandmrtoad #waltdisneyanimationstudios #disneytok #disneytiktok #tea

Keep an eye out for the distorted trees throughout this version 👀 they are a hallmark of Disney background artist and Imagineer Claude Coats who got roped into painting Mr. Toad when Disney’s contractor Grosh Studios told Walt they couldn’t complete it in time 🙈 Claude’s style is everywhere in this ride, but other Imagineers worked on it too, from Ken Anderson for the storyboarding, Bill Martin for the track layout, and Yale Gracey for special effects/lighting (including the motorcyclist). The last scene’s entrance is terrifying but likely was inspired by The Victorian-era "Cabaret de l'Enfer" (H*ll Cabaret), a popular Paris nightclub from the 1890s located in the Montmarte. A Distory listener also pointed out that in Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice, Dante’s Inferno also features a similar face that you walk through as an entrance. Given that Tim Burton grew up in Burbank and went to Disneyland as a teen, its likely he drew his inspiration for that from this version of Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride. Some of the figures shown here weren’t *technically* there in 1955… the signalman, motorcyclist, and some other figures were likely added in the 1961 refurbishment. But since so little footage exists of this attraction, we did the best we could to piece together what this ride would have looked like, going into more detail in our Distory with Kate & Kirk p0dcast series on Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride🎙️ #mrtoad #mrtoadswildride #disneyland #disneyrides #disneyhistory #disneyparks #fantasyland #retrodisney #vintagedisney #disneyfun #disneyattractions #disnerd #disneynerd #disneylandhistory #povdisneyrides #disneytiktok #disneytok #disneysecrets #extinctdisney #disneytrivia #disneyfacts #disneyfan #disneyfans #distory
