D’WAN SIMS D'Wan's mother, D'Wanna (who had the last name Harris in 1994 and was later known by her married name of D'Wanna Wiggins), told authorities that her son disappeared while shopping with her at The Wonderland Mall in Livonia, Michigan on December 11, 1994. Photos of D'wanna are posted with this case summary. D'Wanna stated her son was walking along the corridor between the Target store and the main area of the shopping mall with her when he suddenly vanished at approximately 2:30 p.m. D'Wan has never been heard from again. Investigators administered two polygraph tests to D'Wanna shortly after D'Wan disappeared. She failed both of them. Authorities stated that they did not believe her story and thought D'Wan was never at The Wonderland Mall with his mother the day he disappeared. No witnesses saw him there and he didn't show up on the tapes from the mall's twelve surveillance camera either. Witnesses did see D'Wanna arrive at the mall, alone, at 3:30 p.m., an hour after she says D'Wan disappeared. D'Wanna has maintained her innocence and said in 1995 that she was in therapy to deal with her son's disappearance. She was never been charged in connection with her D'Wan's case due to lack of evidence, and no suspects have been identified. Her mother said D'Wanna was emotionally devastated by her son's disappearance. He had a life insurance policy taken out by his grandmother, but his grandmother said it was for D'Wan's college education and his mother didn't even know about it. D'Wan's father passed a polygraph in his son's disappearance and isn't considered a suspect. He said he believed D'Wanna was a good mother. In the years following D'Wan's disappearance, his mother moved to Durham, North Carolina. She was living with her husband and children when she died there in 2020. There have been numerous leads regarding D'Wan's whereabouts throughout the proceeding years, but all failed to produce any evidence and D'Wan remains missing. MELISSA BRANNEN Melissa was last seen at a holiday party in the Woodside Apartment Clubhouse, at approximately 10:00 p.m. on December 3, 1989 in Lorton, Virginia. Her family resided in the apartment complex. Melissa and her mother were about to leave the party but Melissa went to get some more potato chips before they left, and was never seen again. There were approximately eighty guests present at the party at the time. Caleb Daniel Hughes emerged as a suspect in Melissa's case almost immediately. Hughes was employed as a groundskeeper at Woodside Apartments at the time of Melissa's disappearance; he had worked there for only about two weeks. He was a guest at Melissa's family's party the evening of her disappearance, had been sitting near her when she was last seen, and left at approximately the same time the child was discovered missing. He had a criminal record prior to Melissa's disappearance, but not for violent or sexual offenses. Investigators looked for Hughes right after Melissa's disappearance was discovered, but did not find him until 1:00 a.m. the next day. He had already put his party clothes in the washing machine. The FBI took blood, hair and fiber evidence from Hughes's maroon Honda and tested it in a forensic laboratory. The laboratory found that Melissa could be a source for the hair and the bloodstains, which were found on some tissues in the car, but so could 40% of the general population. Further testing ruled out Melissa as a source for the stains. However, rabbit hairs found in the car matched Melissa's rabbit-fur jacket and there were many blue fibers that matched her sweater and some red fibers consistent with her skirt. Hughes was convicted of abducting Melissa with the intent to defile in 1991, and sentenced to 50 years in prison. He has always maintained his innocence in Melissa's case. He was an exemplary prisoner for most of his term, and accumulated enough good behavior credits to shorten his sentence. As a result, he was released from prison in August 2019, after serving just 29 years of his sentence. Two other men were convicted of attempting to extort ransom money from Melissa's mother shortly after her daughter's disappearance. The individuals were not connected to her actual abduction. Melissa has never been located. RELISHA RUDD Relisha was last seen in Washington D.C. in March 2014. She was in the care of Kahlil Malik Tatum at the time. For over a year Relisha's family had been residing in a homeless shelter in the former D.C. General Hospital; it's the largest shelter in the district, housing hundreds of families and as many as 600 children. Tatum worked there as a janitor. In late February, Relisha's mother, Shamika Young, asked Tatum to care for her. She later said she wanted Relisha to be able to escape the conditions at the shelter, which was filthy, chaotic, crime-ridden, infested with vermin and had no playground. On March 19, social workers came to the shelter to talk to Young about Relisha's absences from Payne Elementary School, where she was a second-grader. She had missed over 30 days by that time, but many of the absences had been excused because Young told the school Relisha was under the care of "Dr. Tatum." On February 25, the day Young placed Relisha in Tatum's care, she accumulated her fifth unexcused absence, and the staff at Payne scheduled a parent-teacher conference for March 5. Young did attend the conference and they told her about support services to ensure Relisha's attendance at school. When she did show up for class she was considered a quiet and well-behaved student. There were reports that Relisha was at school on March 5 and March 7, but the last confirmed sighting of her is March 1. On March 10, school officials called Tatum and told him he had to provide a medical reason and documentation for Relisha's continued absences. Tatum said he was treating her for neurological problems and he was going to discharge her by the end of the next week. Relisha accumulated a further five unexcused absences from school, although her younger brothers continued to attend. On March 13, she reached her tenth unexcused absence. As was required by law, the school reported the family to the Children and Family Services Agency (CFSA) for educational neglect. CFSA didn't consider it a high priority case, however, and it wasn't until March 19 that a CFSA social worker called Tatum and arranged to meet with him later in the day. He didn't show up for the meeting; he had left the shelter hurriedly earlier that day, before the end of his shift. The social worker learned he was not really a doctor, and called a child abuse hotline and the police. Police learned that on March 1, Tatum bought a box of 42-gallon trash bags and some lime, which can be used to speed up decomposition. They stated they believed he had murdered the child. On March 31, police found Tatum's body at Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens. He had shot himself with the same gun used to kill his wife. There was still no sign of Relisha and the police stopped searching the park a few days later. ANTHONY MURRILL Anthony was last seen at his residence in Harris Homes, a now-demolished housing project on Sells Avenue in Atlanta, Georgia, on November 14, 1971. He lived with his mother, stepfather and three older siblings, and shared a room with his thirteen-year-old brother. They slept in bunk beds. That night Anthony went to sleep in the top bunk and his brother slept in the lower one. His brother slept through the night and didn't hear or see anything suspicious. When his brother woke up in the morning, he was gone. There were no indications of a struggle. He has never been heard from again. Despite Anthony's young age, the police initially classified him as a runaway and thought he might have traveled to North Carolina where he was originally from and where he still has relatives. His father lived in that state at the time of his disappearance. After they could find no sign of Anthony in North Carolina, authorities changed their minds and said they thought he was still in Atlanta. Anthony's family did not believe he had run away from home. They described him as a normal, happy child who was close to his family, and had no history of getting into trouble and no reason to run away from home. After his disappearance, his mother chained his bicycle to the front porch and kept the light on constantly in case he decided to come home. According to Anthony's brother, the boys' stepfather, Edward Groves, was violent and had once stabbed their mother. A neighbor reported seeing Anthony getting into Groves's car, but then recanted his statement. Groves has not been named as a suspect in Anthony's case, but Anthony's brother thinks he could have been involved. His brother theorizes that their stepfather sent Anthony to live with Groves's family members, possibly in order to hurt Anthony's mother.
