Thank you so much @deniseflowerz from @calonewsla for capturing the story so beautifully! As a medical social worker I’ve had the privilege of working with thousands of patients and their families in their most vulnerable moments and have seen first hand the obstacles they face as they navigate the complex healthcare system. I myself have struggled with chronic pain and was unable to get proper treatment until recently receiving a diagnosis from a doctor in Tijuana, B.C. I was denied bone density exams because I didn’t meet the age requirement for the typical patient that requires these exams. Which translates to “insurance won’t approve this for you because you don’t fall within the range that allows us to maximize profit.” People from all walks of life can agree that chronic pain, physical and mental disabilities, and accessing appropriate healthcare affects everyone. There is an overwhelming majority of people who agree that our access to equitable healthcare shouldn’t be a matter of profit margins for corporations. I was inspired to write “El Corrido de Luigi” because corridos have been historically used to spread information about events that leave a lesson behind by sharing the details of whatever tragic or heroic event took place. As a daughter of Mexicans immigrant parents living in the U.S. I grew up listening to corridos and believe music is a powerful storytelling tool; except I wasn’t alive or present when these famous corridos like “Lucio Vasquez, Juan Martha, or Lamberto Quintero” were happening. We are all living through this Corrido and I wrote it in real time as more details continued to come out. This is just the beginning of what will be Luigi’s story, but for the first time ever, there is an overwhelming amount of details, theories, and public sentiment being spread by mainstream and social media. As of now, the distributor has flagged the song as having political content and won’t let me release it. Which in itself is a reflection of these systems of suppression we are experiencing collectively. An artist’s duty is to reflect the times -Nina Simone
