Preview of my trip to Los Angeles. My heart goes out to this city and the animals in it while it indueres the devistating wildfires. My trip will be ending early. I still managed to see some malinois stuck at the shelter. I hope these videos get them seen by the right person or rescue. I took this trip for nyko. It’s been two years without him and in honor of him and how much he meant to me I decided to work/play with malinois in the LA animal shelter system and share my experience of the dogs. Welcome Odin! He is a little spitfire. I know the transport was rough on him but I can’t wait to see him blossom with some structure and training. When I saw Madera I thought “this poor girl will be overlooked because of her behavior in the kennel and her ears don’t stand up” she wouldn’t come say hello. I started by dropping food and no eye contact. In about 30 minutes she was a different dog. She is going to make someone a very happy pet. I think she would also be amazing as a second dog. Sometimes a more confident dog can help an insecure dog see that things aren’t so scary. I miss him all the time but today always hurts different. Grief has opened up a new door to the dogs of LA shelters for me. My heart is here because it gave me him and a lot of dogs are in his position at the shelter here. Not having an outlet, scared, reactive due to stress landing them on the euthanasia list. Now in a perfect world I’d foster Bean. I’d implement structure using the crate and using his kibble to train. Building a relationship and trust. I can see he is a little untrusting. He did want to play with the ball but he was quirky. Once he had possession of the ball I tugged on the string and let him win. This escalated into a wild malinois that forgot about the ball and over stimulated. To keep it simple I just used food with him. I didn’t want to create conflict that didn’t need to be there for a first time interaction. He started to lure nice and you can see his tail is up and he is enjoy but still a little unsure. The shelter environment is hard to bring a lot of positive emotions out. More of that comes later with training. Bean is up for adoption. Found as a stray on 12/05. Let’s find this boy an active home where he can learn structure the correct way and set him up for success. I had no idea about Mijo until @jenn3d0 told me about him. He was hidden in the back and not on the adoption floor. He knew basic commands and waned to act like a big puppy. He was so excited to be outside. He took a min to warm up to me but I was able to win him over with some hotdogs. I wouldn’t recommend other dogs at the time until he can decompress. He would benefit from structure in the house and consistent training to brush up commands he already knows. This poor guy didn’t get a fair chance with his previous adopter. He is cute, a little reserved but genuinely wants to climb into your lap. The kennel environment is stressful so although he didn’t really want any toys during our session I can see the drive can be built and would probably enjoy a nice game of fetch once he has decompressed . .
