Imagine you’re teaching your child to swim. Think of all the steps involved: getting comfortable in the water, submerging their chin, then their nose, eventually their whole face. Learning to float, blow bubbles, kick, and hold onto the wall and much more—all these skills build toward swimming. Now, imagine you only praise them when they’re swimming perfectly. How discouraged would they feel if every small effort along the way went unnoticed? Would they even make progress? This is why shaping and reinforcement are so important- not just for swimming, but for any new skill (especially language). Here are some other examples of how shaping might be used: cleaning, brushing teeth, tying shoes, writing, making their bed, playing an instrument, drawing a picture, getting dressed—the list goes on! ➡️ My Time to Talk mini-course, which focuses on communication starting from infancy, is included for free in the Practical Parenting course. And as Andrea, a parent who recently took my course, said: “The most significant change I’ve seen is being able to use what I learned with my two-year-old and noticing a real increase in her communication skills.“ So remember, celebrate small steps. PS: This works best when teaching your child to ask for what they want! Comment READY, and I’ll send you the info!
