#stitch with @CIRI🍍 No shade to the original creator, but The West Wing was a fantasy—politics the way liberals wished it was, not the way it actually is. And that fantasy has consequences. Aaron Sorkin, like Ken Burns, is part of the liberal nationalist mythmaking machine that has spent decades making sure the enslaver “patriots” and their collaborators in slave power are everyone’s heroes—not just the far right’s, but the left’s too. This is the heart of “patriotic education” and why liberal nationalists have been utterly incapable of confronting the far-right’s raw, amoral ferocity. If white oppressors and brutalizers are your heroes, if their words (twisted to mean something in 2025) are supposed to govern us and comfort us, then democracy is already lost. Because once you accept that power justifies oppression, there’s no limit to how far the next “patriots” will take it. Who do you think the original patriots were? If you’ve been softened up by decades of West Wing politics and Ken Burns-style history, you’ve already been trained to accept that the ends (the greatness of the United States) justified the means (violent oppression for millions). That’s the amoral math we’re stuck in today, and we have liberal nationalist fantasists to thank for it.
