Looking to Canada for freedom? That’s an American tradition. Since the Revolutionary War, people in the U.S. who believed in liberty—but not the version the Patriots created—have crossed the border in search of something better. White and Black Loyalists left by the tens of thousands, building entire new provinces like Ontario and New Brunswick after 1791. Indigenous nations who fought alongside the British also moved north to avoid Patriot retaliation. More left after the U.S. Constitution made it clear who was included in the Patriots’ version of “freedom.” Even more went after Upper Canada’s 1793 Act Against Slavery, and the British abolition of slavery in 1834 made Canada an even stronger destination. That’s the world Harriet Tubman was operating in—her idea of freedom wasn’t abstract, it was a real place: Canada. By the time of the Underground Railroad, as many as 40,000 freedom seekers had made their way north. The U.S. has long been a place where liberty was conditional. Canada? That’s where you went when it wasn’t an option. The only surviving law from the Alien & Sedition Acts of 1798 is now being invoked by Trump to fast-track mass deportations. That law is the Alien Enemies Act, and it’s not just an outdated footnote in American history—its a living legacy of the Patriots that includes helping to justify the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II. The Patriots created legal tools—like the Alien Enemies Act—that explicitly targeted immigrants, stifled dissent, and kept power in the hands of the few. Trump and his allies now cite this 18th-century law to sidestep due process, showing just how enduring these exclusionary tactics can be. I also share a few recommended reads that connect the dots between 1798 and the modern day. From Terri Diane Halperin’s detailed study of the Alien & Sedition Acts, to Erika Lee’s sweeping history of xenophobia in America, to Greg Robinson’s account of how the Alien Enemies Act contributed to Japanese American internment—these works remind us that none of this is new or accidental. We need to confront the real history behind our founding myths if we ever want to break free of them. #AlienEnemiesAct #PatriotMyth #HonestHistory #publichistory #JohnAdams #japaneseamerican #HistoryMatters #americanhistory #taskforce250 #1776commission #howrevolutionary #gwmountvernon #georgewashington #patriots

Trump’s Black History Month message isn’t about honoring Black history—it’s about using it. Who gets to be a ‘hero’ in his version of history? Who gets erased? And who’s standing by, letting it happen? Pay attention. 👀 #BlackHistoryMonth #HonestHistory #PublicHistory #taskforce250 #1776commission #howrevolutionary #blackhistory

Phillis Wheatley published her poetry in London because America refused to see her genius. Jefferson, who claimed her work was ‘below the dignity of criticism,’ was too busy building a mythology of freedom while exploiting enslaved people like Sally Hemings. The hypocrisy is staggering. #honesthistory #publichistory #howrevolutionary #patriotmyth #philliswheatley #thomasjefferson

One of the first things I uploaded to our Patreon this morning is the original 1776 Commission Report. This document outlines their new dogma and the significant distortion of the American Revolution, the Patriots, and the Founding Era. It's essential reading for us to start having informed discussions about these changes. In my grad classes, we dive into this report alongside the 1619 Project to critically assess public history efforts. The 1776 Commission was created in direct response to the 1619 Project's appeal, and now things have escalated. "Patriotic education principles" are being imposed on K-12 teachers and at national parks, battlefields, monuments, museums, and other key historical sites. Honest history is being labeled as "anti-American," and there's a surge of "discriminatory equity ideology" that's clouding true historical discourse. We're stepping up our efforts to support those committed to honest public history and holding accountable anyone collaborating with these misleading principles. By building our online community across the digital ecosystem, we can create a strong network of like-minded individuals dedicated to preserving and promoting the truth. #HonestHistory #publichistory #accountability #patriotmyth #howrevolutionary #1776commission #taskforce250 #1619project
Authoritarians erase our shared history because democracy depends on what we believe has happened—and they want to rewrite that for control. We finally started telling America’s full story (Black history, women’s history, bottom-up movements), and that scares them. They divide us, wrap themselves in the flag, and demand obedience—all by silencing truth. But we won’t let them. #honesthistory #publichistory #accountability #patriotmyth #cozyhistory #maga #1776 #gwmountvernon #howrevolutionary #patriots
The American Battlefield Trust calls these places “hallowed ground.” Fine. Let’s grant the premise—but let’s ask: why? What makes them “hallowed”? Is it just the blood spilled? Because if that’s all it takes, we could slap a plaque on any patch of earth soaked in human suffering and call it sacred. Or is it what they represent? And if so, let’s get honest about what that means. Are these places hallowed because they’re symbols of courage and sacrifice? Or because they’re sites of contradiction—where the ideals of freedom and equality, supposedly at the heart of America’s founding, were routinely crushed underfoot? If we’re honoring who fought, we’d better include the enslaved men who seized their freedom on British lines, the Native people defending their lands, and the loyalists who paid the price for their convictions. Are their stories being told? Or are we just selling myths to keep the checks rolling in? So: what makes these places “hallowed,” and who gets to decide? Because if we don’t answer that honestly, we’re just perpetuating the same old whitewashed history—only now with a glossy fundraising pitch. @American Battlefield Trust #honesthistory #publichistory #howrevolutionary #battlefields #hallowedhistory
