Old post but good one! Nursing past one year of age? Guess what?! It is normal for your toddler to still want to nurse frequently. Breast milk continues to provide a significant amount of nutrition in the second year of life and beyond. Measurements of milk volume after 1 year vary greatly across studies, and this variation is likely influenced by geographic location, cultural norms, and other context-specific factors. Estimates across populations indicate that children breastfeeding for >1 year consume from ∼100 to 600 mL/day of human milk and that human milk can (but does not always) provide a substantial amount of energy to infants during this time. PMID: 34115518 Decreasing volume of breast milk after the age of 1 year can also be considered normal but with the decreased volume comes a change in the composition of human milk. Studies show that: ✨After 18 months of life, the concentrations of protein and lipids were higher and carbohydrates were lower. ✨Protein concentrations were even higher after 2 years of life. ✨Fat and total energy concentrations were higher in milk produced after 1 year of life. ✨Milk produced after one year of life was found to have more protein but less zinc, calcium, iron, and oligosaccharides. In summary, human milk remains a source of macronutrients and micronutrients for children >1 year old, although there is substantial variation in milk volume and nutrient concentrations, likely due to changing infant demand and dilution effects. What about immune benefits you may ask?! There is consistency in the literature demonstrating increased concentrations of milk-borne immune components in late lactation, specifically secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA), total IgA, lactoferrin, and lysozyme. Breastfeeding for >1 year continues to provide children with immunological support, although it remains unclear what level of protection this would provide in the older, more developed child. We need a ton more data on prolonged/extended breastfeeding and the benefits of it for babies but the data does show significant nutrition is still provided and protective immune compounds are still found in breast milk after the age of 12 months. #breastfed #babynursing #extendednursing #ibclc #pediatricdietitian #dietitianforbaby #registereddietitian #babydietitian #fyp #viral

These are just some phrases I have learned through my education as a pediatric dietitian that can actually be more harmful than helpful. I will post a separate post on things I do say in replacement in a few days ❤️ I absolutely do not judge if you have used these phrases because many people were raised with these sayings being told to them. Reframing our language around meal time can be an incredibly helpful tool to create more adventurous eaters who have a healthy relationship with all foods. Eating disorders are on the rise throughout the world, let’s do our part to help avoid this in our children. Among teens ages 13 to 18, 3.8% of females and 1.5% of males are reported to have an eating disorder, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. According to data collected by NHS England in 2022 1,721 children and young people were awaiting treatment for eating disorders compared with 603 patients in 2016. This reveals an increase of 185% in eating disorders among children and young people. Hopkinson E, Petty J. Why eating disorders in children and young people are increasing: implications for practice. Nurs Child Young People. 2023 Mar 2;35(2):24-28. doi: 10.7748/ncyp.2022.e1445. Epub 2022 Dec 5. PMID: 36468171. An important finding of the present study is that for 10- to 14-year-old girls, the risk for developing anorexia nervosa has increased significantly over 40 years. van Eeden AE, van Hoeken D, Hendriksen JMT, Hoek HW. The AAP recommends fats to be unrestricted in the first two years of life due to the importance of adequate fat intake for brain development. This is why foods like butter, avocados, coconut milk, peanut butter, and whole fat milk yogurt can be given and are encouraged to be given when starting solids. In the first year of life, children may triple their birth weight. After 12 months of age, growth rate significantly declines (with an average weight increase between 3-6lb the second year of life), this is considered normal and expected. If we continued to grow at the rate we did as infants, we would most likely be giants. If you aren't overdoing one specific food, you really don't need to stress about heavy metal intake. Consistently offering a variety of foods ensures our children are meeting their nutritional needs while not overconsuming any one specific food or ingredient. #blw #babyledweaning #pediatricdietitian #dietitianforbaby #babyfoods #babymeals #toddlernutritionist #toddlerfoods #toddlernutrition

The song was stuck in my head so I used it 😂 Just another friendly reminder that there is no one-size-fits all approach when it comes to nutrition, even for kids. If you aren't sure if your child needs a certain food, supplement, or milk - seek out support from a pediatric dietitian to confirm the best way to meet their nutritional needs. There are many different ways to ensure nutritional needs are being met. Cow's milk can be an incredibly helpful food to meet nutritional needs. Iron-fortified cereals can prevent iron deficiency. Protein supplements are truly RARELY needed unless there is a medical condition. Purees and BLW can be done together. Doesn't have to be one or the other. MVI are not generally recommended for all children to consume but they can be helpful in situations like severe picky eating, nutrient deficiencies, medical conditions, and food allergies. #fyp #viral #pediatricdietitian #dietitianforbaby #babyledwean #toddlernutrition #infantnutritionist #infantnutrition #babyfood #babyfoods
It's that time of year 🤒 and germs are circling. If your child has a sore throat, here's an all-natural sore throat soother that I love making for my kids as a pediatric dietitian and mom! Follow @healthy.mom.healthy.kids for more feeding tips, and share this with a friend who needs it 🤧 The honey 🍯 in these ice pops relieves sore throat pain—more and more research points to the effectiveness of honey as a sore throat and cough soother and as a remedy against upper respiratory tract infections (like this 2021 systematic review and meta-analysis, PMID: 32817011) The coldness also helps! Plus these pops provide immune support from the vitamin C in the mango 🥭 and lemon 🍋 juice, and hydration from the coconut 🥥water 💦 Important elements to help keep your cutie comfortable and on the mend, all in one ice pop. Happy healing! Blend the following, pour into ice pop molds, freeze, and serve: 🍯 2 tablespoons honey (I love using raw) 🍋 2 tablespoons lemon juice 🥭 1 cup frozen mango chunks 🥥 10 ounces plain coconut water *Note: not for littles under the age of 12 months, due to the presence of honey 🍯 xo Malina 🥰 #SoreThroats #GermSeason #WhatIFeedMyKid #PediatricRDN #NaturalFoods #PediatricDietitian #RDN #RecipeShare #DietitianMom #IcePops #RawHoney #HoneyLover #HealthyMomHealthyKids
#onthisday We only get one chance to build strong bones- and this happens when we are children and teens! Children who get enough calcium start their adult lives with the strongest bones possible. That protects them against bone loss later in life! 👍 In the first year of life calcium needs are easily met via breast milk or formula intake ✨❤️ ✨American Academy of Pediatrics statement on calcium: “Most older children and adolescents in the United States currently do not achieve the recommended intake of calcium. Maintaining adequate calcium intake during childhood and adolescence is necessary for the development of peak bone mass, which may be important in reducing the risk of fractures and osteoporosis later in life. A well-rounded diet including dairy products, fruits, and vegetables and appropriate physical activity are important for achieving good bone health. Establishing these practices in childhood is important so that they will be followed throughout the lifespan.” This is why it’s so critically important that if you are opting out of providing cow’s milk or calcium fortified plant based milk that you are making sure your toddler is getting plenty of calcium from other food sources! Fortified milks and dairy products contain a huge punch of calcium and vitamin D in a small portion size versus other food sources that do not have quite as much calcium per portion size. Work alongside a pediatric dietitian to ensure that your child’s nutrient needs are being met if your child has a dairy allergy or you are choosing to not provide dairy milk or fortified plant based milk! #fyp #blw #toddlernutrition #infantnutritionist #toddlerdietitian #pediatricdietitian #viral
