While it is common knowledge that omega-3’s are important healthy fatty acids to include in children’s diets for overall health and brain development. Did you know that fat (yes, even saturated fat) and cholesterol are not something you need to be concerned about limiting in your child’s diet under the age of two years? Current dietary guidelines for Americans recommend fat to be unrestricted in the first two years of life. Eating healthy for most children doesn’t mean following adult goals for cutting back on total fat, saturated fat, trans fat, and cholesterol, particularly for children younger than 2 years. - American Academy of Pediatrics Lipids are considered the most important energy source in the infant diet and are necessary for normal growth and physical activity. Human milk, in which most of the energy is present as fat, provides a relatively high cholesterol intake as well. Mother’s milk and infant formula supply 40–50% of their energy as fat. PMID: 2973471 Approximately 85% of fats in breast milk are saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids - the rest are polyunsaturated. Saturated fats are found in abundance in human breast milk. This is why most infant formulas are made with palm oil which is 50% saturated fat. Their role is to provide energy and immunity and to serve as building blocks, as well as assisting the hormonal system and the metabolism of fats, carbohydrates and proteins. Correct development of the nervous system, retina and other structures depend on an adequate supply of these fatty acids during intrauterine development and in the newborn and infant stages. Not sure how to balance milk feeds? This is a general guideline for how pediatric dietitians encourage a slow transition from a primarily milk-based diet to a primarily solid food diet between 6-12 months old. Reminder, these are just suggestions and there is no exact science on how this process should go. This transition is highly individualized to each child and caregiver and the main point is to ensure that we are allowing the child to lead the way with the amount of milk + solid food consumed while also making sure to provide them with proper nutrition to ensure we are meeting their nutrient needs in a period of rapid growth. ↗️ REMINDER: milk feeds should remain the main source of nutrition until 12 months of age ✅ Do you have more questions about starting solid and just not sure where to start? Here is an EXAMPLE plan on how you can slowly transition your child from a primarily milk-based diet to a primarily solid-food diet between 6-12 months of age. Keep in mind, this approach and plan will vary from family to family and is to be used as a recommendation not an absolute. Always keep in mind the goal of responsive feeding – which means that you as the parent decide what to feed your baby and when, and your baby decides how much they will eat at each feeding. It is important to note that although you may offer meals, that does not mean your baby will eat every time – and that is OK! As long as you follow your baby’s lead and continue to offer solids, he or she will catch on. If you have any concerns about how much your child is eating, talk to your pediatrician. Save and share if this is helpful! #fyp #babyledweaning #babyledwean #babyledfeeding #thebabydietitian #dietitianforbaby #babynutrition #babynutritionist #infantnutrition #infantnutritionist #viral

We can encourage our child to eat nourishing whole foods without labeling foods as good, bad, real, unhealthy, healthy, etc. You guys know that one of my top priorities when feeding my kids is to ensure nutritional needs are being met and optimize health BUT I can do that without creating disordered eating habits or labeling other foods as less than. All foods can play a role in meeting nutritional needs and providing something we need. Instead of labeling foods which can cause our children to feel shame if they want the food that is labeled negatively or overly crave the restricted or "bad" food, we allow moderation and teach our children food neutral language. Hope this was helpful. #fyp #blw #dietitianmom #dietitian #dietitianforbaby #pediatricdietitian #kidsfood #kidsmeals #CapCut
We should also limit added sugar, forgot about that one ❤️ Lentil Meatball Recipe: - 1 cup cooked green lentils - 1/2 cup cooked diced yellow onion (finely dice for 6-12months to avoid choking risk) - 1 tsp. cooked minced garlic - 1 tsp. dried parsley - 1/2 cup rolled oats - 2 tbsp. nutritional yeast - 1 large egg If you have an older child (12 months+), feel free to add cheese, a dash of salt, or other flavorings. Sodium needs are more liberal after 12 months of age and doesn't have to be as much of a concern if the child is eating a nutrient dense whole food diet. #firstfood #first100foods #blw #thebabydietitian #dietitianforbaby #blwmeal #blwideas #babyfood #fyp #CapCut
Balanced Meal for Baby! 👏🏻⭐️ When creating a balanced meal for a baby I aim to focus on three types of foods. ✅High-iron foods. If you have been following me for even a little bit, you know that adequate iron intake is a major goal when introducing solid foods to prevent iron deficiency. Providing a high iron food with every meal is recommended. Examples of high iron foods are beans, lentils, animal based products, sardines, eggs, tofu, etc. ✅Vitamin C containing food. These foods tag team the high iron foods and aid in iron absorption. Most all fruits and veggies contain vitamin C and are also important for babies to be consuming for their vitamin and antioxidant content. Other vitamin C food sources are oranges, grapefruit, grapes, berries, collards, cantaloupe, raspberries, etc. ✅Energy-Dense/Healthy Fat Food. We know that every bite counts when starting solids so choose a food option that contains tons of healthy fats and calories to help meet their nutritional needs. Fats are also recommended to be unrestricted for the first two years of life to aid in brain development! Examples of energy dense and healthy fat foods - avocado, sardines, cheese, olive oil, avocado oil, animal products, eggs, etc. 👉🏻Remember that some of these foods may overlap and meet both the high iron and the energy dense food requirement! Use this simple method to create a balanced meal for your little one! But don’t worry if your little one isn’t always eating a balanced meal. #blw #babyledweaning #babyledfeeding #foodforbaby #babynutritionist #infantnutritionist #infantnutrition #pediatricdietitian #dietitianforbaby #babyfoods #fyp #viral #CapCut
