More often than not, it’s not the emotion that we’re experiencing… 💡We’re actually stuck in the BELIEF, perspective, or narrative around the emotion (i.e. this is bad, this should not be happening, why is this happening, etc). When you recognize this distinction, you’ll have more ability to shift your perspective by reminding yourself: “It is safe to feel this emotion. It’s just energy and it doesn’t mean anything bad or wrong about me. There becomes a hyper-vigilant nervous system, which causes constant sensitivity to potential threats, this nervous system state can make it difficult to relax and feel safe enough to engage in self-care practices. 4. There becomes a disconnection from the body as a coping mechanism to avoid overwhelming sensations associated with the events). This is why tuning into feeling bodily sensations can be challenging. Oh, Pop Psychology. 😬🙃  The internet has made it so easy for Pop Psychology to misdirect. There’s a certain Psychologist who’s very popular I always think of who uses a lot of it.  Pop Psychology says a Trauma Bond occurs between people who form a bond over having similar traumatic event or who go through one together. Leading to an unhealthy relationship.  Anyways, here’s what an actual Trauma Bond is.  A Trauma Bond is an unhealthy emotional attachment that forms between an abuser & their victim in an abusive relationship. (I suggest looking at the Power & Control Wheel to get a basic understanding of an abusive relationship)  In a Trauma Bond there is a power dynamic. It’s much more than being in an unhealthy relationship.  Trauma Bonds are created by a cycle of abuse followed by positive reinforcement. Which causes their victim to feel loyalty, love & infatuation towards their abuser.  Trauma Bonds can happen in any type of relationship. Nervous System Regulation is amazing!  But when we are constantly regulating or “fixing” our human experience through NS regulation…regulation can become an avoidance or suppression mechanism.  Our NS are designed to feel the totality of the range of emotions. You are supposed to be able to feel this activation without leaving your “window of tolerance”.  So next time regulation is making you feel stressed, overwhelmed, frustrated, etc… Let yourself feel upset. Be in your stress response. Apply pendulation (oscillation between activation & safety). When you grow up in a chaotic home- your nervous system gets used to that. And can misinterpret chaos for safety.  When dysfunction is what you’re used to, that becomes what’s “normal”.  When you’re a child, you don’t know any different. Your nervous system adapts to your environment through protective strategies. In the only ways it knows how.  When you begin to heal, it can get confusing. Because what’s actually safe may not feel “safe” to you. It feels foreign, scary and maybe even “bad”.  On the flip side, it can be difficult to sense when a situation is dangerous. Because danger feels normal. (This is partially why trauma survivors often have stories of surviving the same themes of trauma more than once) Your nervous system becomes biased. Seeing life through the lense of the chaos & dysfunction you grew up in. Nervous system regulation & ATTUNEMENT is essential for helping you create new pathways of sensing danger & safety.
