In this sneak peek of “Before a Breath,” our new feature documentary, Stephanie Lee has a prenatal visit with Dr. Joanne Stone at the Rainbow Clinic at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, which specializes in care for pregnant patients who have experienced a past #stillbirth or perinatal loss. More than 20,000 pregnancies in the United States end in stillbirth each year. These losses are not inevitable. At least 1 in 4 U.S. stillbirths is likely preventable. I wish she could see how much we love her. I wish she could taste the cake. My two- year- old is too young to fully understand the concept of death, so we tell her that her sister is peacefully sleeping. But that doesn’t mean we can’t honor her.
