Why can’t you remember your childhood? One of the most obvious signs that you have childhood trauma is that you have trouble remembering your childhood. The reason you don’t remember your childhood is most likely because of dissociation. The sympathetic nervous system responses of fight, flight, or freeze are embedded defense mechanisms that we naturally use to keep us safe during harm and danger. When you don’t have a lot of memory from your childhood that means you probably relied on the defense mechanism of dissociation. One thing to keep in mind on why you can’t remember your childhood is that because you are in an unsafe environment, your brain is always in survival mode. So, the resources of your brain are hyper fixated not on being in the moment, but on surviving and disassociating to protect you from whatever chaos or danger is going on in that moment.
