Is your 9-to-5 stealing from you? 👀 Well I know it feels like it when we look at our pay stubs. But could it be taking more from you than just taxes??? If you swiped to the end then you already know what time it is, but if you’re a caption girlie, lemme break it down for you… Having a dual personality as a 9-to-5er and an entrepreneur can make showing up authentically a challenge (at least that’s what I discovered it was doing to me). See, in the 9-to-5 world we have certain lines we are expected to tow and to “buy-in” to the vision of the organization, even if it’s not fully aligned with who we are. For black women, it’s gets a bit more complicated, as we are also expected to be “the help” even if our titles dictate otherwise. And when it comes to speaking our minds, well there is a whole mental dress rehearsal that takes place as we navigate how to avoid coming across as “disagreeable” or “argumentative”. (Exhausting, ain’t it?) And it’s that very dog and pony show that can sometimes impact how we show up in our businesses. Why? Because it’s hard to take of 20+ years of “going along to get along” and “meeting expectations”, some of which we’d never set for ourselves in real life (but tell me what a steady paycheck, benefits, and PTO won’t make you do). But I’m not going “another further” in life are business until I master ME and it starts with shedding the 9-to-5 mentality when it comes to how I move in my life and business. Ain’t no more conforming over here… So I’ll be “too much”, “loud”, “extra” and “bold” in my show up. I’ll stand on my degrees, experience, and expertise without the superficial barriers of my race, my dialect, or my physical appearance. Imma be who Imma be! Now if you ridin’ with me then give me a follow, cus I’m just getting started.
