DAY 7 of 87 : Parissinikadavu Muthappan Temple the famous Muthappan temple in front of the most BEAUTIFUL river omg! gagged. people would pay millions for this kind of view and it’s literally free. so many things at this temple are free - especially the food, which took me so much by surprise. it’s a simple lunch to be sure, but the fact that every day this temple provide free lunch and dinners to the public - yes is a sign of Muthappan’s generosity - but also a small notion of how generous a lot of Kerala is. this has been my experience so far. people here are so willing to help you. they’re not trying to cheat you or get something from you. could just be my experience but idts! power to the people fr!! it’s an energy. #solotravel #reconnectingtomyroots #kerala #kannur #theyyam #muthappantheyyam #parassinikadavutemple #folklore #localstories #mythology
THEYYAM #2 : Devakoothu Theyyam This is the story of the Devakooth Theyyam!! I mentioned in the previous video that this special Theyyam happens once every two years. However since 2018, due to the popularity of this Theyyam, Ambujakshi Amma has performed Devakoothu annually. During this ritual, Ambujakshi Amma stops at Koolam the night before to change and rest in accordance with the legend. Some people say this Theyyam shares a resemblance to Mohiniyattam - a Malayali classical dance form, which is very graceful. #solotravel #solofemaletraveler #kerala #theyyam #devakoothutheyyam #localstories #mythology #locallegends #reconnectingtomyroots

my theyyam tour begins tomorrow but first some housekeeping - i’ve listed out a series of important things to note about Theyyam that I’ve picked up from talking to guides, locals, and my own research. this is a very labor intensive ritual with a lot of tradition and history behind it. and it’s vital that we get the context to really understand what’s happening. i’m sure there are many more facts about this process - if you know any, drop them in the comments!!! i will be sharing the stories of some of the Theyyams i am going to be seeing this week. supa excited :) #solotravel #solofemaletraveler #kerala #reconnectingwithmyroots #kannur #localstories #history #theyyam
THEYYAM #1 : Shree Muthappan my first theyyam!! i actually think this was the Vellatam because there was only one figure present. we did come back the next day but we pretty much missed the performance so can’t be sure! but I want to try to see this again with Thiruvappana present as well. “Muthappan” in Malayalam means grandfather. this deity is a friend to all regardless of religion, class/caste, race, etc. he is a champion of the underdog and the local people. this is the most popular Theyyam in Kannur. it is the only one that happens year round. part 2 of Muthappan’s story and a visit to his temple coming soon :) #solotravel #kerala #kannur #theyyam #reconnectingtomyroots #localstories #history #mythology #muthappan folklore

DAY 9 of 87 : A Special Theyyam i honestly can’t believe that the world lined up for me to be able to see this very rare Theyyam in my grandmother’s town and familial temple. like what are the odds of that. it really feels like I am not in control of this trip - physical family and family who have passed are really showing me some incredible things about my heritage and Malayali cultural traditions. there may be controversial things about this Theyyam specifically or just around these rituals. I have seen a lot of people my age have a lot of doubts around them (and about these spiritual/religious practices in general). i feel it is important as we’re heading into a new stage of the world to understand the practices and rules that brought us to this point, taking what works, leaving what doesn’t. traditions are often conservative because of the time they were created but they don’t have to remain this way. this Theyyam is a great example of that. #solotravel #solofemaletraveler #kerala #theyyam #devakootu #localstories #mythology #folklore
