Before signing a lucrative contract with the New York Yankees in 2002, Jason Giambi was recognized as one of baseball's top young stars while playing for the Oakland Athletics. Giambi had his best seasons in Oakland in 2000 and 2001, averaging 41 home runs, 38 doubles, and 129 RBIs, while batting .338. He was named the AL MVP in 2000 and was the runner-up for the award in 2001. Following the 2001 season, Giambi signed with the Yankees, where he played until 2008. In 2009, he returned to Oakland, but at 38 years old, the former MVP struggeled, batting just .193. He was subsequently traded to the Colorado Rockies late in the season to assist the team in its playoff pursuit.
