Huang Ping of Jinxi China (outside of Shanghai) has made international headlines due to a unique modification the local government did to his house. When they wanted to build a new freeway where Huang's house stood, they offered him money to move, but he said no. After several rounds of negotiation with offers of more money, eventually the government grew frustrated, cancelled the offer, and built a giant wall around his property and the elevated freeway around his house at the same level of his roof. Now he has to walk through a tunnel built in the overpass to get to and from his front door. The construction noise and dust is so bad that Huang and his grandson who he lives with have to spend the whole day in town, and only return home after the construction workers have quit for the day. One can only imagine how bad it will be when the freeway opens to traffic in April. This is actually quite common in China, and the houses are called Dingzihu or "nail houses" because they resemble nails sticking out of a board of wood. And while Huang has been called "the strongest nail house owner in China" by the local media, he admits that he regrets being so stubborn and in hindsight wishes he had taken the government's offer.
