Every now and then, a foster dog comes along that reminds you how much there is to learn, bringing back the same worries and anxieties as a first-time foster. There’s no room for judgment in this work—every dog and person’s journey is different. We reach out for support, give ourselves grace, and keep trying, even when it feels hard. Day 16 of fostering Harvey has had its ups and downs and it’s been emotional. We’ve built a strong connection—he trusts me completely, even with nail trims. He’s a great companion on walks, nature outings, and jeep rides, and he’s a pretty chill dude at home. But unfortunately trusting my husband or son is another story. We’re doubling down on muzzle conditioning and involving Brian in long-line work amongst other things to try and build trust. I have fostered a ton of dogs but this is something I’ve never experienced before with a dog his size. It’s definitely humbling. I love this boy.
