How do we support kids who age out of foster care? A lot of youth aging out of the foster care system face huge challenges… and often, they don’t have much more than the clothes on their backs. That’s where we come in. One of the ways we help is through our Self-Esteem Building Shopping Sprees, where we take foster youth shopping for brand-new clothes that reflect their own personal style. For many of them, it’s the first time they get to pick out something new… something that’s just theirs 🥹 It’s a small but meaningful way to boost their confidence and remind them they deserve the best as they head into the real world! But this isn’t the only thing we do! We provide a wide range of support for foster youth, especially around the holidays. Replying to @Mike_M There’s also trauma to consider when handling situations like these. Some children experiencing foster care have had their personal items sold or taken away, and that makes these scenarios tricky to navigate without causing further trauma. I would also never want a child in my home to feel like the items that have been gifted to them are just being given away to someone else; I would rather they have the opportunity to exchange those items for something that works for them, especially since those gifts were originally intended for them. I am extremely grateful for the donated items we have received over the years. It means a lot to know that our community is so willing to help children who are in tough situations. I also want everyone to know that every child I have met who is experiencing foster care has been beyond grateful for the gifts they have received.
