Many women wonder if eating too much sugar during pregnancy was the cause of their gestational diabetes diagnosis. That is not just not the case! Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that is induced by pregnancy. The placenta manufactures certain hormones which can block insulin, lead to insulin resistance, and can result in gestational diabetes. Are there other risk factors? Sure. However, what is in our control is changing diet and lifestyle to support balanced blood sugars. That’s where I can help! Myth: Carbs must be avoided if you have gestational diabetes Truth: Carbs do have the biggest impact on your blood sugar, however, they don’t need to be completely avoided during pregnancy. Instead, consuming a portion of carbs with protein, fat, and/or non-starchy vegetables makes them more blood sugar friendly. Need help putting this into practice? When it comes to blood sugar balance, it’s not just about what you eat, but eating patterns as well. A mistake I see quite often when it comes to blood sugar balance is going too long between meals and snacks. When you go too long without eating, this can result in feeling very hungry. When you feel very hungry, it can influence… - What we eat: our body craves quick energy, aka refined carbs and sweets! - How much we eat. And typically, the more carbs eaten, the more blood sugar rises. On the other hand, eating consistent meals and snacks provides your body with consistent nourishment and helps keep hunger levels stable. Need individualized support to manage your blood sugar?
