If you’re using the restroom more than 10 times per day and: ❌Are not pregnant ❌Do not have a medical condition (like diabetes) ❌Don’t take medications causing frequent urination (ex: diuretics) ❌Don’t drink a lot of water because you live in a hot climate or do high-intensity exercise  This isn’t normal! Your bladder is meant to flush toxins out of your body every 3-4 hours, and if you’re going more frequently than that and do not fall into the above criteria, you could have an underlying issue going on, like overactive bladder (OAB), pelvic floor dysfunction, or interstitial cystitis. So my urologist did a cystoscopy and afterwards she told me she saw nothing wrong with my bladder. This news was honestly devastating, because at that point I was looking for some sort of answer that could lead to a solution to my pain. So I spent the next decade searching for relief in all the wrong places. I tried every medical treatment my doctors offered me for interstitial cystitis, like instillations, medications, and botox. Nothing helped, and most of the time I felt pretty hopeless. That was until I dove head first into learning about my nervous system. I learned that if your nervous system is stuck in a state of chronic stress, or “fight or flight”, that it can cause a variety of symptoms in the body, and in my case this was bladder pain. As a Bladder Dietitian, I see so many of you cutting foods out of your diet left and right because your doctor handed you an “IC diet” or “OAB-Friendly” diet list. Following a bladder-friendly diet can be helpful when your symptoms are flared up or you’re trying to decrease irritation and inflammation, but none of these diets are meant to be followed long-term. When you follow restrictive diets like those mentioned above or take it a step further and remove gluten, dairy, oxalates, etc, here’s what you’re risking: ❌Nutrient deficiencies ❌Unintentional weight loss ❌The development of food fear The most important thing I want you to know is that if you’ve been following a strict bladder-friendly diet for longer than 2-3 months and you STILL have symptoms, the food isn’t the problem. You’re likely overlooking some other underlying cause of your symptoms. Some common examples of root causes of IC and OAB that I see in my clients include:  ➡️Nervous system dysregulation ➡️Pelvic floor dysfunction ➡️Hormone imbalances ➡️Overlapping conditions (like endometriosis) I say this with love but it’s time to stop blaming food - how much more can you really cut out at this point? It’s time to start investigating the root cause of your IC or OAB and then addressing it. For my Road To Remission and OAB Freedom clients, this looks like: ➡️Keeping detailed logs of symptoms, stress, and food ➡️Learning more about what triggers to be aware of and what body signals to pay attention to ➡️Practicing not immediately blaming food for flare-ups (this is common) ➡️Participating in deeper discussions on this topic with peers on group support calls Keep in mind that the process of finding and addressing your root cause will take time and is a journey that needs to be individualized to each person. I will be the first person to admit to this… The treatments that helped me become symptom-free from IC and OAB were the things my doctors mentioned and I completely wrote off because I didn’t believe they’d help me.  Example 1: Pelvic floor physical therapy - I didn’t understand the relationship between the pelvic floor and my symptoms.  No one ever explained to me that pelvic floor dysfunction could literally cause all of the symptoms I was experiencing (bladder pain, frequency, and urgency) So when I was referred to physical therapy and the PT office called me to schedule, I told them I wasn’t interested. Years later, I ended up feeling desperate, so I gave it a try, but in the back of my mind I still didn’t believe it would work. And guess what? IT DIDN’T.  A literal self-fulfilling prophecy.  After I became a Bladder Dietitian, I dove into the research more and realized I hadn’t actually given this treatment option a solid try. So, I went back to PT and went every other week for about 6 months.  I began using a pelvic wand on a daily basis at home (after some pushback on my part) and guess what? IT WORKED. My pain and OAB symptoms disappeared after a few months of being consistent.
