Republican Congresswoman Nancy Mace of South Carolina was criticized by Democrats after she repeatedly shouted an anti-transgender slur during a hearing of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform on Wednesday, February 5. While questioning witnesses about USAID’s funding of gender-affirming healthcare in Guatemala, Mace asked: “Does this advance the interest of American citizens, paying for ‘trannies’ in Guatemala?” After Mace finished her questioning, Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-MA) raised the use of slur with the Republican chairman of the committee, James Comer, but was quickly interrupted by Mace who repeatedly yelled the slur again. “Tranny, tranny, tranny! I don’t really care. You want penises in women’s bathrooms and I’m not going to have it. It’s disgusting,” Mace shouted. Connolly then continued his remarks, saying “a slur is a slur,” and asked Comer to counsel Mace about the issue. “We can have debates and policy discussions without offending human beings who are fellow citizens,” Connolly said. Connolly then asked Comer if the “use of that phrase is not, in fact, a violation of the decorum rules.” Comer told Connolly he would look into the issue, but was “not up to date” on offensive terms related to the LGBTQ community, while Mace continued to defend her use of the slur, describing transgender women as “men who have mental health issues dressing as women.” While the hearing was still ongoing, Mace took to social media to double-down on her use of the term, first posting a video showing her initial use of the term, and then posting video of her repeatedly yelling the slur in response to Connolly’s criticism. “Rumor has it, saying it three times summons a Leftist meltdown,” she wrote on X.
