Cole bought the bus for $1 in 1954 and then placed it on a rock in the river. It is said that he used a ferry boat or cables to get the bus onto the rocks. Bruiser added a porch and other luxuries over the years, but the old bus remains as solid as a rock (pun completely intended). We was talkin about Haint stories and he told me one that…lordy give me the chills. Said his granddaddy was a logger back in the mountains when they used a 2 man saw (ole cross cut hand saw) and mules to snakem out with. Said the boss man got to cut on some land that was prime! The owner did tell him however, there was an ole man that lived in an ole house back in there that they’d have to run off. He’d run him off several times, told him the land wernt his and everything but he always come back. Said just ignore him and get the timber. Well said they took out heading up there one mornin. The owner and a few other fellers gathered up and the owner told them to stay put on a ridge top and starta fallin. Said him an a few fellers was gonna go talk to that ole man and let him know what was going on cause said he kinda felt sorry for the man figuring the land was once his families or somethin. Herman said the owner and a few other good size fellers went down to his ole house. Said they could see the chimley smoke in the distance so they was purty close. Hermans Pa an the rest started ta work. Well lil bit later they came back. Unfortunately the poor ole soul had passed just a short time ago cause a far was goin. But he was gone. They sent a man to tell folks down in town about it. Well sad as it was they still had ta work. Herman said his Pa said the minute they started sawin and chippin…. An eeerie breeze was comin up & over the ridge. Said the mules was balkin up and everything. Said them woods got almost just as dark as if a bad storm was brewin up. Said all of a sudden every team of ole mules they had broke out runnin. They hollered and everything but they wernt stoppin. Lot of the loggers was takin out after’em when they stopped dead in their tracks!! Said up on a big ole oak stump was the ole man. Said mind ye, he was old…but even old…he was a very very large man! Bout 6’4 250. Long white hair and a beard. Stood there but ye couldn’t see his lags! He pointed at’em and said “You’ll not tech narry a tree nor sapplin!!!” But when he said that …his mouth never moved! In total they lost 5 members (including one of their managers) during that fatal air crash. ⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘ RONNIE PERFORMED BAREFOOT When performing live, Ronnie Van Zant never wore any shoes. In fact none of the band members that died in the plane crash, were wearing shoes at the time of their death. ⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘ THEY CHANGED THE COVER ON “STREET SURVIVORS ” The album “Street Survivors” was released just 3 days before the fatal plane crash ⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘ THEY’RE THE ONLY BAND WITH NO VOWELS IN THEIR NAME Lynyrd Skynyrd are the only rock & roll band with a name of 13 letters with no vowels. ⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘ NEIL YOUNG WROTE A SONG FOR THEM THAT WAS NEVER RECORDED Neil Young and Johnny Van Zant were actually good friends and both enjoyed the other’s music. The song was called “Powderfinger” but they never recorded it. ⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘ THEY WER ACTUALLY FANS OF NEIL YOUNG Despite their apparent disagreement about Alabama, as a band, Lynyrd Skynyrd were fans of Neil Young. He was apparently also a fan of theirs too. ⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘ THERE IS A MONUMENT IN HONOUR OF THE DECEASED BAND MEMBERS In Magnolia, Mississippi, around 400 yards from the plane crash site a monument was erected in honour of the members of Lynyrd Skynyrd that died in that fatal plane crash in 1977. It is located just off I-55 near to the Louisiana/Mississippi border exit 8. ⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘ THEIR DRUMMER GOT SHOT Artimus Pyle survived the fatal plane crash with torn chest cartilage and managed to stumble to a nearby farmhouse to get help. The farmer was understandably startled at seeing a long haired man covered in blood standing on his doorstep and fired a warning shot over the drummer’s head which hit Pyle in the shoulder. He survived that as well. ⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘ THEY OPENED FOR THE WHO Lynyrd Skynyrd gained national attention when they opened for The Who’s “Quadrophenia” tour in 1973. The same year they released their debut album, “Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd”. ⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘ RONNIE VAN ZANT HAD TWO SINGING BROTHERS After Ronnie Van Zant died in the plane crash his singing duties were eventually taken over by his brother Johnny. Their other brother Donnie is also a singer for the band .38 Special. ⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘ JOHNNY VAN ZANT COULDN’T SING “FREEBIRD ” When Ronnie’s brother Johnny first started as lead singer for the band, he couldn’t sing “Freebird” because it was too emotional for him. When the band used to play the song, the crowd sang it for him. ⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘ RONNIE'S GRAVE STONE WAS STOLEN In 1982, Ronnie Van Zant’s grave stone was stolen from his grave. It was recovered 2 weeks later by police in a dried up river bed. His grave was also dug up because someone wanted to confirm the rumour he was buried wearing a Neil Young T-shirt. His body has since been moved and buried in an undisclosed location. NOTE: Van Zant's casket was outside of his vault but hadn't been opened and Steve Gaines ashes were removed from his tomb and were punctured with some contents poured out. ⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘ THEY NEVER GOT ON WITH QUEEN During 1971, Lynyrd Skynyrd toured in Germany with Queen, the two bands never got on.
