The girls begged me to bring my daughter to spend the weekend with her. So, I called her mom and made sure she would be home, that it was OK for her to spend the weekend. The arrangements were made: I’d drop her off after school that Friday, and she would bring her home Sunday after church. ★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★✯★ We started as soon as she got off the bus, and it got dark before we could get there. I don’t remember much about the town except it had an old country store. There was a sign that said “established 1880.” The way the place looked, we had stepped back 100 years in time. I told my daughter, “This place creeps me out. Something is wrong here.” She begged me to let her stay. We got to her friend’s house, and I didn’t doubt that her mom wouldn’t protect my daughter. So, I let her stay. ★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★✯★ I headed for the hour drive home and still couldn’t shake that feeling that something wasn’t right. It was a dark night, the chip and seal road was long. I didn’t see a soul, until something brown flashed on the passenger side of the car. I felt a bump. I thought I’d hit a deer, so I stopped to make sure it was dead. When I got to the front of the car, nothing was there. No blood trail, no damage to my car. I looked on both sides of the car and had no signs of damage or an animal. That really creeped me out because I knew I had hit something. ★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★✯★ There I am, standing in the middle of the road, black as night except for my head lights. I walked around the car one more time, that’s when it happened, I stepped into something like a wall of static electricity. It was head to toe. I had only felt it one other time, and that was years ago. I knew I had stepped in the middle of a spirit. I stood there and the feeling would go away and then it would come back. Over the next few minutes, I let them pass through me and then headed to my car, locked the doors, and drove home. I knew what had happened but getting anyone to believe me was a totally different story. ★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★✯★ I did some research on the area at the historical society. Apparently, many years before a regiment of Confederate soldiers had marched in that direction headed toward the battle of Fort Smith. A story by Spooky Appalachia Back in the late 1940’s at University of South Carolina two students saw a man dressed in silver open up a manhole and disappear into the underground late one night. One of the students happened to be a newspaper reporter and wrote about this experience. About 6th months later, a police officer was making his rounds on the campus one night and came up on a couple of mutilated chickens. He went to his car to report the incident and saw a strange man dressed in all silver. The man turned around and the police officer noticed his odd features. He had an odd colored face and third eye located in the middle of his forehead. The officer fled the scene and returned with backup, but they were unable to find the man. Almost 20 years later a group of fraternity guys thought it might be fun to take their pledges down into the underground catacombs of the university. They went to explore and when they came around a corner they came up on a crippled looking old man dressed in all silver. The man then turned around and hit one of the young men with a pipe and they decided to flee. Later that night a man hunt was started but nothing was found. **𝗔 𝗧𝗔𝗥 𝗛𝗘𝗘𝗟 𝗧𝗥𝗜𝗕𝗨𝗧𝗘** Fox’s Gap, North Carolina — In December, I made another visit to the secluded North Carolina Monument at Fox’s Gap on South Mountain. Sculpted by Gary Casteel and dedicated in 2003, this tranquil location is situated just off the world-famous Appalachian Trail. The day's foggy conditions perfectly encapsulated the reflective mood suited to the historic events that took place here. The monument’s design and intricate details are truly captivating. At around 9 a.m. on September 14, 1862, Union General Jacob D. Cox’s Division (Ninth Corps) launched an attack on Confederate General Samuel Garland’s Brigade at Fox’s Gap. Cox's 3,000 Ohioans overwhelmed Garland's North Carolinians, driving them from the stone wall lining Daniel Wise's farm field. As reinforcements arrived, General D.H. Hill deployed Georgians under Thomas F. Drayton into the fray. Of the 225 engaged from the 50th Georgia Infantry, 47 were killed, and 112 wounded (22 mortally). Two generals lost their lives during the battle for Fox's Gap. General Garland was mortally wounded while rallying his men, and the Union Ninth Corps commander, Major General Jesse L. Reno, was struck down by a volley from General John Bell Hood's Texans.
