Red 40, one of the most widely used artificial food dyes, has been linked to hyperactivity and behavioral challenges in children. Studies, including a 2012 meta-analysis published in the Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, found that artificial food dyes can worsen symptoms in kids with ADHD. While Red 3 has been banned in cosmetics due to cancer risks, was still allowed in food. Red 40, made from petroleum, is banned in several countries but remains common in the U.S. It’s time to hold our food system accountable and prioritize our children’s health.
