Twelve cold stun green sea turtles were transferred from Northern Florida to the Florida Keys-based Turtle Hospital last evening. It generally occurs when water temperatures fall below 50˚F (10˚C) where sea turtles are present. Cold-stunned turtles become lethargic and are eventually unable to swim causing them to float at the surface. Wind and/or tides may wash them ashore. If temperatures remain low or turtles are not rescued, they can develop secondary health problems or die. Luna Diana’s Release! 🌊🐢 Luna Diana, a gorgeous 270-pound adult female loggerhead sea turtle, was released this morning off Key West, Florida! 🏝️ She came in around a month ago after being spotted by a recreational boater, who contacted the US Coast Guard Key West Sector. Our team met them at the dock with the Turtle Hospital ambulance and brought her to the hospital for her rehabilitation. 🚑 She was covered in barnacles, and a crab could even be seen in the wound of her shell where a boat had hit her. 🦀 Treatment at The Turtle Hospital included wound care, antibiotics, fluids, and vitamins. Huge Sea Turtle RESCUE this evening with the US Coast Guard Marathon Station! 🛟🐢 Two fishermen spotted a large green sea turtle entangled in a stone crab trap off the 7 mile bridge in Marathon, Florida, and called The Turtle Hospital stranding hotline. A team from The Turtle Hospital responded to the rescue with a crew from Marathon Station USCG. It took all hands on deck to pull “JP Saul” onto the Coast Guard vessel. 🌊 The large marine turtle has serious entanglement wounds to her front right flipper. Honey is used as an antimicrobial for wound care. ❤️‍🩹 We then flushed the wound with diluted betadine, and JP went back into the tidal pool for swim therapy.
