Kinda Interesting Things #159: The Open Secret by Houston Conwill If you’re waiting for the 4/5/6 train at the 125th Street Subway Station, you’ll come across these bronze triangles that have some colorful details within them. Commissioned by the MTA back in 1984, Houston Conwill’s "The Open Secret" is the first art installation commissioned by the MTA’s Arts & Design program. The art piece comprises four bronze triangles with abstract scenes of Harlem's history, anchored to the walls of the mezzanine at the 125th Street subway station. The piece reflects themes typically found in Conwill’s work like community, history, and the creation of sacred spaces, all seen through the lens of the Black American experience and the ongoing pursuit of equality. The piece invites viewers to look closely and explore the pyramidal bronze cosmograms, where you’ll find abstract details, hidden objects and secrets. According to the MTA, these triangular panels serve as a time capsule, capturing life in Harlem during the 80s. Conwill’s “The Open Secret” is one of three site-specific MTA art installations that have been designated as part of the @The Met’s current exhibition “Flight into Egypt” — that examines how Black artists have engaged with ancient Egypt through visual, literary, musical, scientific, scholarly, religious, political, and performative pursuits. This is the first time the @MTA and The Met have come together to highlight the site-specific art installations at subway stations, so be sure to check out the art piece at 125th Street station, and check out Flight into Egypt on view at the Met Museum until February 17. Kinda Interesting Things #160: Message from Malcolm If you’re waiting for the 2/3 train at the 110th Street Subway station in Central Park North, you’ll come across these mosaics with quotes written on them. This is “Message from Malcolm” an art installation by Maren Hassinger. Commissioned in 1998 as part of the MTA’s Arts & Design program, this art installation consists of two mosaic panels that pay tribute to Malcolm X. The art piece incorporates quotes from Malcolm X himself — written in a style that evokes the Islamic Kufic script that’s often used in the Qu’ran. At the entrance, you’ll see this blue and white panel that reads: "I believe in a society in which people can live like human beings on the basis of equality." And on the subway platform itself, you’ll find this blue and gold mosaic wall that reads: "I lived in Egypt, I stayed in Egypt, and I was among brothers and I felt the spirit of brotherhood." Hassingers “Message from Malcolm” is one of three site-specific MTA art installations that have been designated as part of the @The Met’s current exhibit Flight into Egypt — that examines how Black artists have engaged with ancient Egypt through visual arts, literature, music, politics, and performance. Kinda Interesting Things #161: “Harlem Encore” by Terry Adkins At East 125th Street and Park Ave. in Harlem, along the Metro-North's Park Avenue Viaduct, you’ll notice this bridge that has a @The Met designated art piece. This is “Harlem Encore” — a sculpture by Terry Adkins. The 125th Street Metro-North train station dates back to the 19th Century, and is part of the two-mile Park Avenue Viaduct that carries trains in and out of Grand Central Terminal. When the station called for a renovation in the late ‘90s, sculptor Terry Adkins was commissioned to create these silhouetted aluminum panels on the east and west side of the bridge crossing over 125th Street — which were unveiled in 1999. There are two parts to this sculpture: According to the MTA, on the bridge's western façade, Adkins memorialized the Afro-Atlantic ancestors with figures that reflect the spiritual triumph over adversity. And on the east side, the facade salutes continuity and urban life with figures seen in the midst of skyscrapers. Both sides feature sphinxes and suns that add strength, dignity, and timelessness. “Harlem Encore” is one of three site-specific @MTA art pieces that have been designated as part of the Met Museum’s current exhibit Flight into Egypt — that examines how Black artists have engaged with ancient Egypt through visual arts, literature, music, politics, and performance. 💖 Description: video interview with access artist Rae Lanzerotti, standing in front of a half-dozen Heart sculptures on display at the Ferry Building. Rae smiles at the viewer, as they stand next to their mini-heart, “Touching Love.” 🫶🏽 While covering our KH Fam, Dev Heyrana, we had the privilege of meeting access artist Rae Lanzerotti (IG@raerotti) and wow, were we touched by their story, both figuratively and literally. 💫 Rae (they/she) is a genderqueer, low vision/disabled artist reimagining what it means to experience art. After sudden vision loss in 2020, they innovated new ways to create, ensuring art is not just seen but felt and heard. Their #HeartsinSF sculpture, “Touching Love,” embodies this mission, an invitation to connect through touch, sound, and sensation. A born-and-raised San Franciscan, Rae’s heart has always been here, but now it takes shape in a whole new way. Through their leadership in Graphic Medicine International, they’re pioneering accessible comics and redefining storytelling across multiple mediums. Art that welcomes everyone? That’s a vision we can all embrace. 💕

This mural is one of many public art commissions for Destination Crenshaw, a community development project that will stretch 1.3 miles along Crenshaw Boulevard. Expected to open later this year in 2025, Destination Crenshaw consists of new community spaces, landscaping, investment in local business, and art commissions from more than 100 Black artists. Getty is proud to be the lead arts funder that will support artists in bringing their artworks to life. From the official High Line: “The High Line is both a nonprofit organization and a public park on the West Side of Manhattan. Through our work with communities on and off the High Line, we’re devoted to reimagining the role public spaces have in creating connected, healthy neighborhoods and cities. Built on a historic, elevated rail line, the High Line was always intended to be more than a park. You can walk through gardens, view art, experience a performance, savor delicious food, or connect with friends and neighbors-all while enjoying a unique perspective of New York City.” @Garrett from 💛GOLDIES💛 you were right, this was an amazing way to spend an hour.
