This past Saturday was a whirlwind of emotions! I am the newly crowned Ms Wheelchair South Carolina and in August I will compete for Ms Wheelchair America!! If you don’t know my story, I am an ER trauma nurse for the past 14 years, 8/30/22 I was shot with an AR15 in my front year, while walking in the headlight of my car, on purpose. I was left paralyzed from the hips down.. a week from my 32nd birthday and a month for being married to the LOML! It’s a true testimony that it was meant to be, I hope to one day tell you all the story of how great God truly is! And how truly blessed I am to still be alive today and thriving!! I know there may be a time that TikTok will go away. My platform: People of determination This platform focuses on medical and hospital education in spinal cord injuries, accessibility for adults and children, and mental health. From being an emergency room nurse taking care of handicapped and disabled patient to becoming a paraplegic herself, she was able to see both sides of the issues faced. With her determination and drive to be as independent as she was prior to being shot and left paralyzed, she knew that anything is truly possible with determination and a purpose. And she is determined to not only tell but show the world that we are not handicapped or disabled, but people of determination. Determined enough to see and make a change, start movements, and be a voice to bring awareness to the Nation that handicap and disabled issues are just as important as anything else on the Nation’s agenda while empowering those along the way! ![A little acting clip for each month of the year to celebrate the work I put in 🎬❤️ 2024 was a year of growth. I pushed myself in ways I never have before, in acting class, in my personal life and by trying new things. It’s really easy for me to feel like I’m not accomplishing anything because I haven’t booked a lot of jobs. But taking matters into my own hands by producing, co-writing and starring in my own content, is definitely something to celebrate and be proud of. Also signing with my agent @ariseartistsagency and my first appearance on international TV during the Paralympic closing ceremony! But truly it’s not about the jobs. I feel my craft growing and refining. The difference between two years ago when I started taking class in LA and now is astronomical. We also have lots to celebrate in terms of disability representation, most notably “Wicked” starring authentically disabled actress Marissa Bode in a major role in one of the biggest films of the year. Also seeing independent films “Daruma” and “Good Bad Things” at Slamdance along with numerous shorts (and my own!) that celebrate and uplift disabled voices. Things are changing and I’m so excited to head into 2025 as part of this movement. What are you proud of yourself for this year? Yumi and Monster are coming soon…🩷 If you didn’t see my recent instagram post, my debut picture book has a name. It has also technically launched. I’m waiting for official preorders and release dates - as soon as I have them, I will share them with all of you. In the beginning years of sharing the genesis of this picture book idea and concept drawings, I used the temporary name “Monster and Me” until a final title found its way. “Yumi” came along. Yumi is a Japanese and Korean name; a representation of the ethnicities and mutated genes that I am made up of, subsequently causing the progressive muscle-wasting condition I live with and the inspiration behind Yumi and Monster. The forlorn cute monster is the rare disease that follows me around, and together we must embark on a journey to acceptance. My editor and I liked the name Yumi, because it sounds like “you and me” in English. While this story is inspired by my disability, it was important to me that this modern fairytale be for anybody, you and me, who has an uninvited enigma in their life. Yumi and Monster is a story for those who have dealt with life, identity & acceptance struggles, illness, loss, grief, change, and the parts of ourselves we try to avoid. I wanted everybody to be able to see themselves in Yumi. This reel includes sneak peek sculptures (of Yumi). Not only will Yumi and Monster come alive in book form, they will also take physical form as designer vinyl figures. I can’t wait to share everything that I’ve been creatively working for my LA book launch party. Until then, I’ll be sharing little anecdotes like this - from my first book experience, to developing the story, to creating and adapting the style and techniques to my disability.
