We know that our little ones benefit from routines. Just like adults, children feel safe and secure when they know what is going to happen next and they can count on consistency. Babies also benefit from routines! (🚨 Remember, a routine is different from a schedule! A routine is a series of steps that are consistently completed, like in a bedtime routine, whereas a schedule often means events happening at a specific time, such as eating at 9am and napping at 9:30am.) You will notice that we often talk about following a predictable cycle with newborns as opposed to a consistent schedule, meaning a predicable routine with flexible timing. This is because, even with babies as young as newborns, following a routine in beneficial. In this study, they examined children’s participation in everyday routines over a 2-year period and the relationship of routines to children’s sleep duration. 177 families participated in the study, and parents were interviewed when their children were ages 4 and 6 years. They reported on their children’s everyday routines and perceived sleep duration. The results found that following the same general daily routines in early childhood has been associated with increased sleep duration! I’m curious if you have found this to be true for your babies and children? Do you tend to follow the same daily routines with your little ones, or do you find that going with the flow works best for your family?
