Ok… jokes aside… there is some truth here. Marriage is messy, and we show up with different families of origins, trauma, fighting and communication styles, and Primal Questions. Typically, these things are opposite, making navigating conflict confusing and frustrating. Then you throw hurt into the mix… (yes, my friend, you WILL hurt each other at some point), and now we’re in an ongoing gridlock of being in a relationship with each other’s behavior. I honestly believed the way I did things was more efficient. I thought I knew everything. Guess what? He thought the same about himself. How can two people be right? (Spoiler alert: they can, but that realization comes with healing.) I can tell you how I became the front-runner in this competition. He betrayed me. Yep. He made a big mistake and betrayed my trust. That was it. All bets were off, and I had the upper hand. I was perfect. He was a jerk. And he didn’t deserve me. My heart was no longer safe with him. And he couldn’t do anything right. (Oddly enough, that makes the pain feel a little better.) I’m exaggerating a bit, but if I were honest with myself, I truly believed this sometimes. The truth is. I’m just as flawed as he is. I’m only 2-3 decisions away from betraying his trust. It wasn’t until I humbled myself, looked in the mirror, and took responsibility for my role that I could see my husband’s beautiful character and watch him shine. I’m simplifying a complicated healing process that required both of us to work hard. But my point is: Don’t try to change your spouse. Instead, become wildly curious about them. I watched my dad love my mom for over 39 years, until his last breathe, and I pray everyday that he is proud of me for following in his footsteps. Is taking a step back from your relationship to come back stronger wrong, absolutely not and it happens all the time. Can cheating be forgiven, absolutely, with hard work, dedication to the process and enforced change in the way you move. But, for me, she was my person, my light, my answered prayer, my God given assignment from day 1, and I don’t play with God like that! I pray, that no matter how hard the love you share can be, you always strive to remember the grass is greener where you water it. It’s a throwback to our childhood, but it will help you remember! 🤪 I promise! 🚫 STOP: Stop allowing emotions to spin a narrative that simply isn't true. The worst thing we can do is make a permanent decision when our emotions are at their highest. Press the pause button and step back—kind of like a time-out. 🛐 DROP: Drop to your knees in prayer. God can handle your ugly. He hasn't abandoned you. When my hopelessness was at its highest, I knew no other option but to pray and ask God to help guide me through the wilderness. He WILL give you divine peace and guidance. Ask Him to see your partner through His eyes. ❤️ROLL: Roll is more of a reference to having more fun. As we dove into our most challenging conversations and conflicts, we did so in motion… hiking, walking, bike-riding, and yes, love-making. Sometimes, intimacy allows you to communicate when words fail. (Never enter into physical intimacy if you're not safe or comfortable.) This is just the very beginning, and every situation is vastly different.
