According to this study (PMID: 23914932), including heavy or explosive-based lower body training invoked muscular adaptations that resulted in significant improvements to peak speed AND endurance. One of the other interesting findings from this study is the FREQUENCY. They found that adding in a THIRD lower body lifting session each week had a greater impact on running performance, compared to adding in an extra running session instead! This is HUGE for runners dealing with overuse injuries that could benefit from fewer miles. Unfortunately, too many runners avoid lifting heavy altogether because they're worried about getting sore, or feel that running alone works out the legs enough. But this simply is NOT true. Runners need to include lower-body lifts to reduce injury risk and enhance performance πŸ’ͺ🏼.
