“There are only two genders!” *proceeds to list two sexes…* 🙄 To anyone who heard trump’s comment yesterday, here’s a reminder why this statement will always be false: ✨ Gender does not equal sex - gender is a social construct (meaning we made it up!) that encompasses a person’s identity based on social roles, behaviors, and our own perceptions of gender (woman, man, nonbinary, + more) . Sex refers to biological characteristics determined by our chromosomes, sex organs, and hormone levels (female, male, intersex). ✨ Culturally, there have always been more than two genders documented across civilization and history (yes, even in Mesopotamia!). Biologically, there has also always been more than two sexes due to natural variances in our chromosomes that create characteristics between and completely outside of these labels. Saying either of these terms are limited to two options is simply false (and that’s not a matter of opinion). ✨ Intersex folks exist, account for up to 2% of the population, and encompass a wide variety of sex characteristics that do not fit into male or female categories! no, not all stims are good for us! 🙃 While I do have some of those first stims too, unfortunately my most prevalent has always been lip picking and ✨it sucks!!!✨ Full transparency, it’s something I’ve felt a lot of shame around over the years and often wear lipstick to hide in person and online. There’s been very few times in my life where my lips don’t look busted, bleeding, and hurt like hell! yes, tattoos ✨do✨ hurt! 🙂‍↕️ But I do find as an autistic person particularly with chronic pain issues, the process isn’t much worse than my day-to-day experiences! However, there are a few things I do to make it easier for me: 👋 choosing private one-on-one studios (less people, noise, etc!) 👋 booking with repeat artists I trust who value creating a safe and sensory friendly environment (and that includes wearing a mask!) 👋 bringing sensory tools like noise canceling headphones, sunglasses, or fidgets 👋 getting smaller pieces with less black work (shorter appointment time + quicker healing!) 👋 not booking or doing anything else on that day to avoid overstimulation That being said, physical touch can still be quite uncomfortable for me, but it is something I can personally tolerate in short amounts because I love tattoos. The healing process can also be a bit triggering as someone with skin picking issues and the itchiness is no joke! 🙃 But a reminder that not all autistic folks will be able to or want to get tattoos, and that’s totally okay too! #tattoo #tattooing #actuallyautistic #autisticadults #autisticunmasking #autistic #spd #sensoryprocessingdisorder #disabled #chronicpain

And for me, one of the best parts about being an adult is finally being able to buy all the things I couldn’t as a kid! You’re never too old to surround yourself with things that bring you joy, and as long as it’s not hurting anybody, it’s not anybody else’s business!
