January Costco finds for people with diabetes! It’s a new year, so let’s start the blood sugars off right with some great options! 1. Crisp power protein pretzels - I just can’t get enough of these. 15g of protein per serving, 3g of net carbs, no blood sugar impact, and I swear that flavor profile is THE BEST 2. Wilde protein chips - they’re chicken based, and the Buffalo flavor is out of this world. They also have <5g of carbs per serving so no blood sugar impact 3. Nu trail granola - this flavor is the best, and the total carbs again are <6g. Minimal blood sugar impact and great for a snack on the go 4. Chicken meatballs - great as a side, an app, a main course, heavy on protein, minimal carbs, and super easy to prep for lazy meals Which of these are on your list, and should I do another part in the series? #diabeteseducation #diabetesdiet #typeonediabetes #insulindependent #bloodsugarmanagement #t1dlookslikeme
Alcohol and blood sugars - what to look out for this NYE! It’s time to ring in the new year of 2025 (what a year it has BEEN!) But, that also may mean that you are having a drink (or two, or three, or six….) So you’ve gotta know what this will mean for your blood sugars so you can be SAFE tomorrow!
Here’s a couple things your care team SHOULD have taught you: #1. Beer and wine may RAISE your blood sugar. Liquor likely DROPS your blood sugar. Mixed drinks can do BOTH…. So you’ve GOT to be careful on how you dose - alcohol kicks in hours later (like fat and protein) but can cause the bottom to fall out and your number to tank. #2. If you do go dangerously low when drinking, you CANNOT use glucagon to save yourself.  Your liver is too busy detoxifying alcohol, and it won’t release stored glucose…meaning you need ORAL carbs. This could be a MUCH more in depth topic, but at the very least, I wanted to give a little insight so you are SAFE. If your care team didn’t teach you these things….time for a possible change 😉 #diabeteseducation #type1diabetic #insulindependent #t1dlookslikeme #bloodsugar #glucagon

The 3 S’s for stubborn high blood sugars (you must know these) When you have a stubborn high blood sugar that will not come down and you’ve done what seems like everything for it… …it very likely comes down to one of these three things:

Sleep, stress, or sickness. 1. Lack of sleep can lead to insulin resistance as your body perceives it as stress and it can increase your cortisol levels. 2. Increased mental stress = increased cortisol which increases insulin resistance until your subconscious mind relaxes.  3. Sickness = physical stress perceived by the body, more cortisol and more insulin resistance. Notice they all involve elevated cortisol which is very detrimental for happy blood sugars as cortisol can also break down muscle tissue into glucose which is no bueno. Did your care team ever teach you this? #diabeteslife #highbloodsugar #type1diabetes #diabeteseducation #insulinresistance
I had not eaten at White Castle since before I had diabetes, but if you need a quick snack, here’s the most blood sugar friendly options: 1. The original slider - 7g fat, 16g carbs,, 6g protein - solid snack option or low snack option to correct it with protein/fat. 2. Crispy chicken with cheese -  10g fat, 22g carbs, 11g protein. Could pitch half the bun for a lower carb option. 3. For breakfast - the slider with egg & cheese - 13g fat, 15g carbs, 10g protein. Not the best, but you could certainly do worse.  Whats your go to White Castle order? We dont have these in Florida.  #diabeteslife #diabeteseducation #typeonediabetes #t1diabetic #insulindependent
Diabetes restaurant nightmare - the kitchen messed up What I’m about to describe is one of the top reasons that people with diabetes are afraid to eat at restaurants. You order your meal, you're super excited, you take your insulin on time expecting the food in 15-20 minutes, the food comes out… …and they made the wrong order for you. You panic, because you’ve already taken insulin, and now you're concerned that your blood sugar could absolutely tank. What do you do? Ask yourself these questions: 🩸What is your current blood sugar and what’s the trend? More than likely you still have plenty of wiggle room. 🩸When did you dose for the food? If it’s been 15-20 minutes, the insulin is not peaking. 🩸Do you have low snacks on you just in case? Hopefully yes, but if not, tell the restaurant the situation and they will likely give you a regular soda. This can seem really scary but the odds are pretty low of it happening; if so, you now know how to handle it. Has this happened to you? #typeonediabetes #diabeteseducation #insulin #type1diabetes #diabetesproblems
“I just can’t figure out my diabetes.” If you have felt helpless with your diabetes, just know that you are not alone. Sara came to us after 26(!) years of living with diabetes feeling completely lost. Most notably: 💉high blood sugars after every meal (lord forbid she had a restaurant meal) 💉exercise was a nightmare with low blood sugars 💉she felt ZERO support from her care team After 26 years it can seem really hopeless and she felt like nothing could change so this was her last big hope… …and boy did things get better. She’s now upset when she averages in the 130s instead of the 120s.  She’s nailing restaurant meals when she chooses to go out to eat, low blood sugars have evaporated from exercise, and she’s even tamed pizza meals, the nightmare of most people with diabetes. So if she can do it after 26 years of living with diabetes, what’s stopping you? #diabeteseducation #typeonediabetes #t1dlookslikeme #diabeteslife #insulindependent
Holiday celebration subs for people with diabetes With holidays in just a couple days, there’s a million different options for food and a ton of different delicious ones…. However, we still want blood sugars to be happy. As a result, here’s 3 amazing substitutes that you can make to not sacrifice flavor, but to stay in range:

1. Christmas cookie substitute: instead of having cookies that are very likely to spike your blood sugar, get your sweet cinnamon fix by cutting up a honey cinnamon RISE protein bar, warm it for 10 seconds in the microwave, and enjoy. You’ve now got 18g of protein, 4g of fiber, and just 5 all-natural ingredients to help keep your blood sugars in range. 2. Instead of Christmas Chex Mix (usually made with pretzels, Chex cereal, white chocolate and M&Ms), you could make a high protein puppy chow using Catalina Crunch as a low carb, high protein cereal base and using protein powder as your outside coating. 3. Instead of regular eggnog, you can make a lower carb version with almond milk, coconut milk, cinnamon, allulose, egg yolks, nutmeg, and vanilla extract. Much lower carbs and a fraction of the impact. Which of these will you be trying? (I’m doing #1) #diabetesdiet #t1diabetes #insulindependent #bloodsugar #diabeteseducation

Do you need to take Resveratrol if you live with diabetes? You may have heard of Resveratrol because it does a TON of different things for the body. It’s an antioxidant, an anti-inflammatory, it’s been shown to improve blood pressure, protect your brain, and it may even increase your lifespan. However, does it have any positive impact on blood sugars for people living with diabetes? Let’s see what the research says:
In this first study, in a population of people with type 2 diabetes, it showed that there was an improvement in both A1c and in insulin resistance. In a second study, of a population of people with type 1 diabetes, it showed improvement in fasting blood sugar (waking up blood sugar) as well as A1c.   And then, in a review of many different studies, it showed that Resveratrol works positively in people with diabetes because it can increase glucose uptake by the muscle through a similar mechanism to that of exercise…which is pretty awesome. If you decide to take it, most studied doses tend to be between 500-1200mg. I love the SugarMD version because it’s the perfect dose from a reputable source. Ultimately, it is something you could talk to your care team about adding to your regimen. #type1diabetes #diabeteseducation #diabetescontrol #insulindependent #bloodsugarmanagement #t1dlife
Do you need maca root if you live with diabetes? Maca root is a very fun supplement because it can help with things like libido, testosterone, menopause symptoms,  and even sports performance but will it also help your blood sugars?
Let’s see what the science says:

In this first study that was conducted in rats with Type 2 diabetes maca root improved beta cell function, hyperglycemia, as well as oxidative stress. So, a positive start but it was in rats. In the second study, they reviewed all of the animal studies involving maca root and diabetes populations and all 6 of them were mice or rats. However, oral maca extracts reduced glucose levels in diabetes rodent models and decreased oxidative stress. So another positive in favor of maca root, however, that’s a very small sample size and none of them were human. This third study had mice with both Type 1 diabetes as well as ED (which can be a common paring due to blood flow issues). The maca root actually helped with both blood sugar and the ED. So what’s the verdict? The jury is out because more studies were done on rodent models. However, there have been human studies done testing other things in non-diabetes populations so talk with your care team if it’s something that may be of interest to you. The starting dose tends to be between 1.5-3g per day. I really like SugarMD as a brand because each capsule is 1,000mg so it’s very easy math to start it off slow and work your way up. Do you take maca root? Let me know! #macaroot #type1diabetes #diabeteseducation #insulindependent #t1dlookslikeme #bloodsugarmanagement
